Ceiling Grid Tee

Overview
What a grid tee is
A ceiling grid tee is one of the inverted-T members that form the framework of a demountable ceiling. Tiles rest on its flanges and its web carries them back to the suspension above. Longer members run continuously in one direction and shorter ones lock between them, so what results is a two-way framework rather than a set of parallel bearers.
It matters in two ways at once. Structurally it is what holds the ceiling up, so every tile, light fitting, diffuser and detector in that ceiling is carried either by the grid or independently from the structure above. Visually it is the ceiling's module: the grid line is what a room reads, and where it falls decides where tiles cut, where partitions can land and where fittings sit.

- It is not a suspended ceiling grid system as a product. That is a published material entry covering the proprietary framework, its hangers and its accessories as a bought assembly; the grid tee is the position one member of that framework occupies, and the same position can be filled by sections of different profile and finish.
- It is not a ceiling hanger. The hanger suspends the framework from the structure above and sets the void depth; the tee is the member the hanger carries, and it spans horizontally between suspension points.
- It is not a ceiling perimeter trim. The trim closes the field of the ceiling where it meets a wall and bears the edge tile on one side only; a tee sits within the field and carries tiles on both sides.

Everything laid into or fixed to the ceiling is carried by the grid and passes into the structure above through the suspension, which is why unplanned loads are commonly taken independently.
The reason a grid ceiling exists is that tiles lift out, so anything that stops a tile lifting — a fixed fitting, a cable, a partition head — removes access at that point.
Where a grid ceiling contributes to fire separation, the grid, tiles, hangers and fittings belong to one assembly and are considered together rather than component by component.

- That a grid ceiling can carry anything hung from it. The grid is arranged for the tiles and the items coordinated with it, and other loads are commonly supported independently from the structure above.
- That the grid module is a late or arbitrary decision. It fixes where tiles cut, where partitions can land and where fittings sit, so it is settled early and is difficult to change afterwards.
