Ceiling Hanger

Overview
What a hanger is
A hanger connects a suspended ceiling to the structure above it, carrying the ceiling's weight and setting the depth of the void between. Where a ceiling is not fixed directly to joists, hangers are what hold it up.
Acoustically they are also the ceiling's weakest point. A ceiling installed to reduce sound from above depends on being disconnected from the structure, and every rigid hanger is a connection. Resilient hangers exist for exactly this reason.
