Ceiling Void

Overview
What a ceiling void is
The ceiling void is the space between the ceiling plane and the structure above. Its depth is not incidental: it is determined by what has to fit in it — ducts, pipes, cable containment, light fittings, structure — and by the coordination between them.
Because it runs continuously above rooms and over partitions, it is also a path. Sound travels over partitions through it, fire and smoke can spread through it, and air can move through it, which is why voids are commonly subdivided.

- It is not a subfloor void. That is below a floor and is about ground moisture; a ceiling void is above a ceiling and is about services and continuity.
- It is not a service void in the wall sense. A wall service void is a shallow zone behind a lining; a ceiling void is a horizontal space of substantial depth.
- It is not a roof space. A roof space is beneath the roof itself and is commonly ventilated to outside; a ceiling void sits within the building.
