Facade Joint Baffle
Explains the baffle as the element that makes an open panel joint a deliberate arrangement rather than a gap, working by geometry instead of by sealing.

Overview
What a joint baffle is
In an open-jointed facade the gaps between panels are not closed. A baffle sits behind or within each of those gaps, shaped so that there is no straight line through the joint: air can still pass, and pressure can still equalise across the panel, but rain driven at the joint meets a surface rather than an opening and runs off it.
That is a different strategy from sealing, and it is what an open-jointed facade is built on. The joint is left open on purpose, because a drained and ventilated cavity behind needs to breathe and to dry, and because a seal at the outer face would become the thing keeping water in rather than out once it eventually failed. The baffle reduces how much water arrives in the cavity; it is not what keeps the building dry, and it is not asked to be.

- It is not a rainscreen panel. The panel is the face that takes the direct impact of rain and sheds the great majority of it; the baffle occupies the gap between panels and deals only with what arrives at that gap, and its whole premise is that the gap stays open.
- It is not a cavity barrier. A barrier is installed inside the concealed cavity to interrupt it so it does not run continuously through the construction; a baffle sits at the outer face in the panel joint and deliberately leaves air free to pass, which is the opposite of interrupting.
- It is not sealant. A sealed joint works by closing the gap, and published sealant entries cover those products; a baffle leaves the gap open and defeats water by shape — sealing the joints of a drained and ventilated facade works against the principle the facade operates on.
