Plant Support Plinth

What a plant plinth is

A plinth is a raised base built to receive something that stands on a building surface. On a roof it lifts what it carries, and the fixings holding it, above the waterproofing; on a floor or a slab it raises a base above whatever may be spilled or washed across the surface. Either way the plinth is part of the building, not part of the thing standing on it.

It matters because the alternative is setting a load and its fixings directly onto a finished surface. On a waterproofed roof that means bearing on, and commonly piercing, the very layer the roof depends on, at points that afterwards lie underneath something heavy and difficult to inspect. A plinth moves that junction to a position formed deliberately for it. The junction it creates is an upstand condition in the middle of a roof rather than at its edge, worked out on the same principles as an edge upstand but without an edge's own reasons for being there.

  • It is not an upstand. An upstand is the waterproofing turned up a vertical face and terminated above the water; the plinth is the construction being turned up. At a roof plinth the two exist together rather than as alternatives.
  • It is not a paving pedestal. A pedestal is an adjustable support carrying a paving unit as part of the walking surface; a plinth is a formed base carrying something that is not part of that surface at all.
  • It is not a foundation. A foundation transfers load into the ground; a plinth sits on a structure that already exists and passes load into it, which makes the question what that structure can already take rather than what the base is founded on.

Structural transfer

A plinth concentrates a load at a position on a deck or slab that may not have been designed to receive one, which is why the structure is consulted rather than assumed to cope.

  • That the plinth carries the load. It transfers the load to the structure beneath it, and its presence says nothing whatever about what that structure can take.
  • That raising equipment solves the roof problem. It moves the junction to a position formed for it, and that junction still has to be waterproofed, terminated and maintained.
