Shear Wall

Overview
What a shear wall is
A shear wall is a wall used deliberately to resist lateral forces — wind, and in some regions seismic action. Because a wall is very stiff in its own plane, it can collect sideways force from the floors and carry it down as a continuous element.
In many buildings the shear walls are grouped as a core, around stairs and lifts, where a wall is required anyway and can run uninterrupted from top to bottom.

- It is not simply a loadbearing wall. A loadbearing wall carries weight downward; a shear wall's defining duty is resisting sideways force in its own plane, and a wall may do one, the other or both.
- It is not a racking panel. A racking panel is a sheathed frame element; a shear wall is a wall acting as a stability element in its own right.
- It is not a partition, even where it looks like one — which is exactly why it is dangerous to treat it as one.

- That a wall carrying no floor can be removed. It may be the building's lateral stability, and its removal would not be visible as a sagging floor.
- That adding openings to a wall only affects it locally. In a shear wall, openings reduce the stability of the whole structure.
