Transfer Beam

Overview
What a transfer beam is
A transfer beam exists because the supports above it are not in the same places as the supports below it. It collects load from columns or walls at one grid and redistributes it to a different arrangement beneath — commonly where an open space is required at a lower level.
That makes it a different kind of element from an ordinary beam. An ordinary beam carries a distributed floor; a transfer beam carries concentrated loads from structure above, and those loads can be very large.

- It is not simply a big beam. Its purpose is to change the load path, and the concentrated loads it receives make its behaviour and its consequences of failure different.

- It is not a lintel, because it carries structural supports rather than the wall over an opening.
