Overview
What a backing wall is
Where a facade is supported off something rather than being self-supporting, the wall it is fixed back to is the backing wall. It takes the wind loads and the weight of the cladding and delivers them into the structure.
It is also, in most rainscreen and drained arrangements, where the real weather line sits. The visible cladding sheds most water; the backing wall and the control layers applied to it are what actually keep the building dry and airtight.

- It is not the cladding. The cladding is the visible outer layer; the backing wall is behind it and commonly does the more important job.
