1.Finding a position that does not spoil the hall

Consider where a duct could run if the room sits in the middle of the plan, and ask what spaces it would have to pass through.
A duct route across a ceiling or through a cupboard affects rooms that are not part of the project at all.
A duct that crosses other rooms or a ceiling void affects spaces outside the project, and a qualified professional has to confirm that route is available.
Note whether the door would open directly into a dining or living space, since air from the room travels that way first.
A cloakroom that opens onto a sitting area is judged far more harshly on air movement than one off a hallway.
Ask whether any fan would run on after use, and note which nearby rooms would hear it while people are sitting in them.

5.Privacy and sound beside living space

In a room this size, two fittings competing for the same air is the usual reason a layout has to be redrawn.
7.How visitors actually use the room
This is the one room in the home used mostly by people who do not know the house, and that changes several small decisions.
Consider that visitors will use this room without knowing the home, and check whether the light switch would be findable from the doorway.
Switch position outside or inside the door is often decided by the installer, and a visitor is the person it fails.
Write down whether coats and bags would end up in this room, and whether a hook or a place to set something down is realistic here.
If the cloakroom replaces a coat cupboard, it inherits the coats whether or not the plan allowed for them.
Note whether the mirror position would suit a visitor as well as the household, since this is often where people check themselves before leaving.
Mirror position is usually set to suit whoever is fitting it, and a small adjustment now serves everyone better.
Consider whether the door would close and latch reliably, and note how a visitor would know from outside that the room is in use.
Doors in tight spaces are often hung against an uneven wall, and a door that will not latch undermines the whole room.
Write down what happens when somebody with a pushchair, luggage or shopping is in the hall while the cloakroom door opens.
The hall does two jobs at once in most homes, and adding a door to it changes both.
Note whether the room would double as somewhere to wash muddy hands or fill a bucket, and record that use if it is genuinely likely.
Secondary uses affect the basin size, the tap and the floor finish, and they are rarely mentioned until afterwards.
