1.Watching the drive while it is raining
A drive is one of the easiest surfaces to observe honestly, because it is usually in full view from a window. Almost all of the useful detail is only visible while rain is falling.
Watch the drive from a window during heavy rain and note where water begins to run rather than soak in, and how quickly that starts.
The point at which a surface stops absorbing and starts shedding is the observation that matters, and it lasts only a short while.
Note which way the water leaves the drive at each edge, and whether any of it heads towards the building rather than away from it.
Direction of travel is the single fact a professional will ask for first, and an owner can supply it without measuring anything.
Water travelling towards a building should be described to a qualified professional rather than acted on from your own observation.
Record where the water forms an unbroken sheet across the surface, since sheeting marks the areas taking more water than they can absorb.
Sheeting on part of a drive and not on the rest usually means the surface or what lies beneath it changes at that point.
Note the puddles as they form rather than at their fullest, because the order in which they appear says more than their final size.
The first puddle to appear is generally at the lowest or least absorbent point, which is where any conversation should begin.
Move a parked vehicle before the next spell of rain and look at the ground it usually stands on, which nobody ever sees wet.
The ground under a regularly parked vehicle is often the most compacted part of the drive and the least understood.
Take photographs while the water is still running, with something familiar in shot such as a kerb edge or a wheel, and note the date.
Pictures taken after the event show a stain; pictures taken during it show the behaviour somebody is being asked to explain.
2.What happens where the drive meets the road
The boundary with the road is where drive water questions stop being yours to answer. Record what happens there carefully, then take the questions to the body that can answer them.
Note whether water runs off your drive towards the road or pavement, and where exactly it crosses the line of the boundary.
This is a factual observation an owner can make, and it is the starting point for a conversation with the relevant authority.
Whether water may leave a property onto a road or pavement is entirely a matter for the relevant authority, not for you to determine.
Note whether water arrives from the road onto your drive, and whether it does so along the whole frontage or at one particular point.
Water arriving from the road changes who needs to be involved, so it deserves recording separately from anything your own surface does.
Record the condition of the crossing and kerb line as you see it, including any dip, break or worn hollow where water gathers.
A worn hollow at the entrance is a long-running record of where water crosses, and it is easily photographed from your own ground.
Note the position of any grating or gully in the road near your entrance, without touching, clearing or lifting anything.
Their position relative to your entrance is useful context for whoever you speak to, and noting it takes only a moment.
Anything in the public road belongs to the relevant authority; do not clear, open or interfere with it in any way.
If the access is shared, note where water crosses between properties and keep the record factual rather than attributing responsibility.
Shared access disputes are settled on facts and paperwork, and a careful, neutral record is the most useful thing you can hold.
List what you do not know about responsibility at the frontage, and take that list to the relevant authority or drainage undertaker.
Getting the question to the right body early avoids a professional conversation that cannot reach a conclusion anyway.
3.Water heading for the garage and the low end
Most drives have a low end, and something is usually stored there. This is where an owner record turns from interesting into urgent.
Note how close water comes to the garage or car port threshold, and whether it ever crosses it, describing the position rather than a figure.
A threshold gives you a fixed reference that anybody can understand, which is more reliable than any measurement you attempt.
Water entering a building is a matter for a qualified professional to look at, and it should not be left to another wet spell.
Mark the lowest point of the drive where water gathers, and note whether it clears on its own or only once the weather turns.
Whether water clears by itself or simply evaporates is the difference between a slow route away and no route at all.
Look inside any garage or store for tide marks, lifted flooring, rust lines on stored metal or a damp band across the floor.
Old marks inside a building record events that predate your record and are frequently the only evidence of them.
Write down what is stored directly on the floor at the low end, and move anything that would be spoiled before the next heavy rain.
This is one of the few actions an owner can take straight away without touching drainage in any way.
Note where water sits against a door frame or under a door, and photograph it while it is there rather than describing it later.
The evidence disappears shortly after the rain stops and is very hard to recreate afterwards.
Note whether the drive appears to fall towards the building or away from it as you walk it, and record that impression without putting a number to it.
A walked impression is honest and useful; an owner attempt at measuring a fall is neither, and it can mislead badly.
4.Channels, gratings and covers on the drive
Most drives have openings somewhere, and few owners could say what they are or where they lead. Mapping what is visible is the part you can do.
Map every grating, channel, gully and cover you can see on or beside the drive, marking each one on a simple plan of the frontage.
Nobody can discuss the drive sensibly until there is an agreed picture of what openings exist and where they sit.
Note where each opening sits in relation to where water actually gathers, since the two are often nowhere near one another.
A grating at the high end of a drive is a common and entirely invisible problem until somebody stands there in the rain.
Watch whether water actually reaches each opening, passes over it or gathers short of it, and write down what you saw.
The question is not whether an opening exists but whether water gets to it, and only observation during rain answers that.
Look for covers that appear to have been surfaced over during earlier work, such as a rectangular outline showing through the finish.
Buried covers are common after resurfacing, and their existence changes what any professional will want to investigate.
Leave every cover and grating exactly as it is, and record what you can see from above rather than opening anything to look inside.
Everything worth knowing about the condition below is beyond what an owner can establish anyway.
Lifting covers or entering a chamber is work for suitably qualified people and should never be attempted by an owner.
Note whether bins, planters, parked vehicles or stored material were sitting over any opening at the time you looked.
An opening blocked by a bin during the wet spell is a different finding from one that is genuinely failing, and the two are easily confused.
5.Marks the surface leaves after water has gone
A drive keeps a written record of its own behaviour if you know what to look at. These marks can be read in dry weather.
Look for fans of silt, grit and debris left where water slowed, and for tide lines showing how far a puddle once reached.
These traces let you map events you never witnessed, including the heaviest rainfall of the wet weather.
Note where moss, algae or green film has established, since these mark ground that stays damp long after the rest has dried.
Growth of this kind takes time to appear, so it records a persistent condition rather than a single wet spell.
Record any sunken blocks, ruts, dished areas or a line across the surface where the drive appears to have settled.
A settlement line often follows something buried beneath, which is exactly what a professional will want to know about.
What lies beneath a settled line is for a qualified professional to establish; do not open or excavate the surface to find out.
Photograph staining rings and dark outlines on the surface, which show the shape of standing water even in dry weather.
Stains give you the outline of a puddle without waiting for rain, and they are easy to overlay on your plan.
Note where weeds and growth concentrate in joints or along one edge, since they generally follow moisture and trapped silt.
A line of growth across an otherwise clean surface is a free indication of where water sits or travels.
Note where ice forms repeatedly in cold weather and record the positions, without drawing any conclusion about what should be done.
Ice returns to the places where water stands, so a cold spell can map standing water for you without any rain at all.
How to deal with repeated ice on a surface people walk or drive over is a question for a qualified professional.
6.How the drive is used and what that adds
The way a drive is used changes what reaches its surface and what ends up at any opening. Owners hold this information and are rarely asked for it.
Note where vehicles usually stand, turn and reverse, and whether those areas look different from the rest of the surface.
Repeated turning wears and compacts particular patches, which frequently become the wettest areas on the whole drive.
Note where water goes when a vehicle is washed on the drive, and record it rather than assuming it goes where rainwater goes.
Wash water often follows a different route because it arrives in a concentrated place, and it can reveal the surface behaviour clearly.
What may be discharged onto or into any drain or gully is a matter for the relevant authority or drainage undertaker.
Record where oil or fluid drips have stained the surface, keeping the note descriptive rather than concluding anything about it.
Staining marks where vehicles habitually stand and is information a professional may want when considering the surface.
Note anything stored on the drive that washes about in rain, such as grit, sand, compost, timber or bagged material.
Loose stored material is a common source of the silt that ends up at every opening on the frontage.
Write down whether larger vehicles use the drive for deliveries or works, and whether the surface changed after any of those visits.
A surface that altered after a particular visit gives a professional a date to work back from.
Note where bins, planters and stored items permanently sit, and whether any of them stand on or beside an opening.
Things that never move become invisible, which is precisely why they are missed when the drive is being discussed.
7.Handing the drive record to a professional
A drive record is easy to assemble and easy to lose. Getting it into one place before the conversation makes the conversation shorter and better.
Draw one plan of the frontage showing openings, low points, where water enters and where it leaves, rather than annotating photographs.
A single plan lets somebody take in the whole frontage at once, which a set of separate images never allows.
Pair each photograph taken during rain with one of the same spot taken dry, so the difference is obvious without explanation.
Paired images are self-explaining and remove the need for anybody to trust a description written after the event.
Write down what you know about how and when the drive was built or resurfaced, and who told you, even if the account is incomplete.
Partial history clearly labelled as such is useful; an authoritative sounding guess is not.
Ask what would need to be established about what lies beneath the drive before any change to the surface is discussed.
The answer usually reorders the whole conversation, because it puts investigation before design rather than after it.
Ask whether a camera survey of any existing runs would be worth arranging here, and what such a survey could and could not establish.
Knowing the limits of an investigation before arranging one avoids expecting an answer it was never going to give.
Agree with yourself in writing what will not be altered on the drive until somebody qualified has seen it during rain.
Once a surface is changed the evidence goes with it, and the wet spell you have already observed cannot be repeated.

- Anything you hold describing how and when the drive was built or resurfaced
