Limits
When it is not sufficient
This is general planning preparation. These situations need a qualified professional, and often the relevant authority.
- Specifying an outdoor electrical supply, socket or cable route, which is work for a qualified electrician
- Deciding how fuels, oils or garden treatments should be stored, which comes from the product supplier
- Advising on repair, sharpening or servicing of any powered or bladed tool
- Confirming what your local collection arrangements accept, which only your local authority can state
- Replacing a landscaper judgement about the upkeep a particular design or surface will demand
The checklist

Tick the boxes on paper or on screen — nothing is stored, so print the page if you want to keep your marks.
1.Counting the kit you already own and actually use
Tool lists written from memory are always short and always flattering. Do this one with everything in front of you.
Bring every garden tool you own out to one place where you can see them together, and write down what each one is and whether it still works.
Kit kept in three places gets double counted or forgotten, and seeing it in one heap gives an honest list in a few minutes.
Mark anything you have not picked up since the last growing season, and note whether that is because you no longer need it or because it is awkward to reach.
The reason matters more than the fact, since one answer means the item should go and the other means the storage is the problem.
Note duplicates and anything left behind by a previous owner or handed on by family, and decide what stays before any storage is sized.
Inherited kit fills sheds without ever having been chosen, and it is the easiest thing to take off the list.
Write down which items are broken, blunt or missing a part, and decide for each one whether it will be dealt with or removed from the garden.
Broken tools take exactly the same space as working ones and quietly reduce the storage you think you have.
Repair, sharpening and servicing of powered or bladed tools should follow the manufacturer instructions or go to a qualified repairer rather than being improvised.
Note anything currently borrowed, lent out or shared with a neighbour, and record where each of those items physically is.
Shared kit distorts the count in both directions and is worth settling before storage decisions are made.
List the consumables your kit needs, such as fuel, line, blades, ties, bags and spare parts, and note where each is kept at the moment.
Consumables are rarely counted, yet they take shelf space and some of them cannot share a store with everything else.
Storage and handling requirements for fuels, oils and garden treatments must come from the product supplier and a qualified professional, not from a general list.
2.The jobs a new garden layout would create
Every line on a garden drawing quietly buys a task. Put the tasks next to the drawing while it can still change.
Take each zone in the garden you are planning and write beside it the job it creates, such as cutting, sweeping, watering, emptying or moving something out of the way.
Seeing the tasks listed together is the only reliable way to notice that a design has quietly doubled the work.
Mark which of those jobs would need a tool you do not currently own, and highlight the ones that would need a powered tool rather than a hand tool.
Powered kit brings charging, noise, storage and servicing with it, so it deserves to be noticed separately.
Identify any job that would happen above head height or at the far end of the plot, since both change what the kit has to do and who can do it.
Height and distance are the two things that turn a household job into one that gets postponed indefinitely.
Note the hard surfaces the layout adds, and ask a landscaper what keeping each of them looking as intended usually involves before the material is chosen.
Surfaces vary enormously in how they weather and how they are kept clear, and that question belongs before anything is laid rather than after.
How a particular surface should be cleaned or treated must come from the material supplier and the landscaper who laid it, since methods differ by material.
Check whether a mower or a barrow could physically reach every zone, going through the gates, over any step and along the narrowest part of the route.
A zone that machinery cannot reach becomes a hand job forever, which is a fair choice as long as it is a choice.
Ask the garden designer or landscaper what kit the design assumes the household owns, and write their answer into the brief.
Designers do not always state this, and it is one of the most useful questions an owner can ask before drawings are settled.
3.Powered tools, charging and where the supply comes from
Anything with a motor brings its own requirements into the garden. Note them before deciding where kit lives.
Write down for each powered item whether it runs from a lead, a battery or fuel, and note what that means for where it is stored and where it is started.
These three arrangements have completely different storage and supply implications, and mixing them in one store rarely works.
Note where batteries are genuinely charged at the moment, and whether that place is dry, convenient and anywhere near where the tool itself is kept.
Charging usually migrates indoors to a worktop, and planning around what actually happens is more useful than pretending otherwise.
Ask a qualified electrician what providing a usable outdoor supply would involve, rather than designing around a lead run out through a window.
This question changes what is possible in the garden and is far easier to raise at planning stage than to solve afterwards.
Any outdoor electrical supply, socket or cable route is work for a qualified electrician, who should also establish what applies locally before anything is agreed.
If anything runs from a lead, walk the route that lead would take and note every point where it crosses a path, a step or a planted bed.
A lead across the main route is the sort of hazard households live with for a long time simply because nobody wrote it down.
Note which powered items are loud and when you would realistically use them, then consider what that means for neighbours on either side.
Being aware of this early sometimes changes the kit chosen, and it always makes the neighbour conversation easier.
If anything runs on fuel, ask the supplier what their storage requirements are and record the answer before deciding where that tool lives.
The answer may rule out keeping fuel in the same place as everything else, which affects the whole storage plan.

4.Watering kit and the reach from the tap
Most watering problems are really distance problems. Measure the reach before deciding what planting to take on.
Note where every outside tap is, then walk from each one to the furthest planted point you intend to keep watered.
The distance between tap and far corner is what decides whether the far corner is ever watered at all.
Note how much hose that furthest point needs, and decide where the hose lives when it is not in use.
A hose with nowhere to go ends up coiled across a path, which is both a hazard and the reason it eventually gets abandoned.
Walk the hose route and note what it would drag across, such as a bed, the corner of a border or an edge that would be damaged by it.
Hoses cut corners exactly where people do, and the damage shows up in the same places every season.
Note how much of the planting would be watered by can rather than hose, and whether whoever does it can carry a full one that distance comfortably.
Carrying water is the task most quietly dropped, and the planting furthest from the tap is what suffers first.
If an automatic system is being considered, ask the installer what it needs from the water supply, what it needs from a power supply and who maintains it afterwards.
Ongoing maintenance and winter arrangements are the parts of these systems that owners are least often told about.
Any connection to the mains water supply, and what is allowed on it, must be established by a qualified plumber or installer and confirmed locally.
Decide who waters when nobody is at home, and be honest about whether that arrangement holds through the driest part of the season.
This single answer often decides how much container and new planting the garden should have at all.
5.Weight, reach and who is actually holding the tool
Kit is usually chosen for the strongest person in the household. Record who really uses it and what that changes.
Identify the heaviest item you own, note who in the household can move it, and record the height it is currently stored at.
Weight combined with storage height is what makes a tool stop being used, and both are easy to change at planning stage.
Note which items are stored above shoulder height and whether taking any of them down needs two hands or a second person.
High storage looks efficient on a drawing and turns into the reason a tool is left where it was last used.
Note any step or threshold that heavier items have to be moved over, and mark where that means lifting rather than wheeling.
One step between store and garden is enough to change how often heavy kit gets brought out.
Note which jobs currently involve kneeling or long spells bending, and record them for the conversation about how beds and edges are laid out.
Bed height, path position and edging all affect this, and a designer can only take it into account if it is stated.
Consider whether long reach tools are being used because there is no straightforward way to get closer, and raise that with a landscaper rather than buying more reach.
Reach tools are often a symptom of an access problem that could be designed out instead.
Work at height, on a ladder or over a boundary should be planned by a qualified professional with suitable equipment rather than solved with longer tools.
Consider whether whoever does the heavy jobs now will still want to, and note what would have to change in the garden if they could not.
Writing this down now gives a designer something to work with rather than a problem discovered much later.
6.Clippings, bags and the run to get rid of them
Garden work produces material, and where it goes shapes whether the work happens at all.
Write down what currently happens to garden waste, including whether it is collected, taken away by somebody or dealt with somewhere on the plot.
The existing arrangement is the baseline, and any new planting is added on top of whatever it already struggles with.
Note which jobs produce the most material at once, since the peak rather than the average is what decides how much standing space is needed.
A hedge cut or a big tidy produces more in one session than everything else does over a whole season.
Walk the route garden waste takes to the front of the property and note every step, gate and tight turn along the way.
If waste has to be carried through the house, that fact alone will decide how often anybody takes on the job.
Note where bags, bins or a barrow would stand while a job is in progress, and whether that space is already occupied by something else.
Work stalls when there is nowhere to put the material down, which is a layout problem rather than a kit problem.
Check what your local arrangements are for garden waste before assuming the volume a new layout produces can be dealt with easily.
This varies by area and is quick to establish, yet it is rarely checked until the first large tidy.
What may be put out for collection and what has to be taken elsewhere is set locally and should be confirmed with your local authority.
Note the material you would not want to keep on the plot at all, and ask a landscaper what usually happens to it after work of that kind.
Removal is often assumed to be included in garden work when it was never actually discussed.
7.Where each item lands after it has been used
Tools return to whatever is convenient, not to whatever was intended. Design around the behaviour you already have.
Note where tools actually end up after use rather than where they are meant to live, and be honest about the gap between the two.
The place things drift to is usually where storage should be, and it is free information you already have.
Match the items you reach for most often to the zone they are used in, and note how far the current store is from that spot.
Frequently used kit that is stored far from its zone is the main reason gardens fill with things left out.
Note which items come back wet or muddy, and identify somewhere they could stand and dry without being brought into the house.
Without a drying spot, muddy tools either go indoors or go into the store wet, and both cause problems.
Decide which items you want kept off the floor, since floor stored kit takes up exactly the space needed to reach everything else.
Floor space is the constraint in almost every garden store, and deciding this in advance shapes what is built or bought.
Note which items are only used for part of the year and decide where they go while they are out of use.
Seasonal items are the ones that block the front of a store for months at a time.
Check whether the same space is expected to hold bins, bikes or recycling as well, and decide which has priority when it runs short.
This conflict is almost always discovered after the store is in place, when the choice has already been made by accident.

Having these to hand usually makes the first conversation shorter and more useful.
- Your written list of every garden tool, with its condition and where it is currently kept
- Manuals and servicing information for any powered kit, including what the manufacturer states
- Supplier information on how any fuel, oil or garden treatment you keep should be stored
- The garden drawing or sketch layout, with the upkeep task written next to each proposed zone
- Notes on where the outside taps are and how far each reaches into the garden
- Your local arrangements for garden waste, as confirmed rather than as assumed

Write these down in your own words, with the date, so everyone is working from the same version.
- What you are getting rid of before any storage is sized, including the broken and the inherited
- Which upkeep tasks the household will do and which will be done by somebody else
- Whether an outdoor power supply is wanted, so it can be raised with a qualified electrician early
- Where the hose lives, and how the furthest planting is watered when nobody is at home
- Which items must be kept off the floor and which may be stored at height
- Which bulky items will not be owned at all, and how those jobs are covered instead

- Somewhere for wet and muddy tools to stand and dry before they go back into a closed store
- The peak volume of material from one big cut, rather than the steady trickle from ordinary tidying
- Spare surfacing or edging left behind after work, which then lives in the garden permanently
