1.Where direct sun actually lands through the day
Growing areas fail more often from too little sun than from anything to do with soil. Observe the light before deciding on a position.
Note where direct sun falls in the morning, at midday and in the late afternoon, and mark on a sketch the spot that holds it for longest.
The sunniest spot is rarely the one that looks most convenient, and choosing convenience over light is a common reason a growing area disappoints.
Identify what casts shade over each candidate area, and note whether it is a building, a fence, your own planting or a neighbour's tree.
Shade cast by a neighbour's tree or building is not yours to remove; discuss the options with a qualified garden professional rather than assuming.
Consider how much lower the sun sits outside high summer, and which candidate areas fall into shade for a large part of the growing season.
A site assessed in midsummer can be shaded for much of the period when growing actually needs the light.
Note whether the area is sheltered or exposed, and where wind funnels between buildings or races along a boundary.
Exposure damages growing more subtly than shade does, and funnelled wind between structures is easy to overlook until something is in the ground.
Write down whether the site sits at the bottom of a slope or against a cold boundary where cold air is likely to collect and linger.
A low corner behaves differently from the rest of the garden, and it is worth flagging to a professional rather than discovering it in the first season.
Record whether reflected heat from a wall or an expanse of paving reaches the spot, and note how quickly the ground there dries out.
2.Water, hoses and the carrying distance
Watering is the routine that decides whether a growing area survives its first season. Measure the effort involved before the beds are positioned.
Walk from the nearest outside tap to each proposed bed position carrying a full watering can, and note how the journey feels rather than how it looks.
Carrying distance quietly decides whether a growing area is watered consistently or gradually abandoned, and it is testable today.
Note whether a hose reaches the far end of the proposed area, and where it would have to be dragged across planting, a path or a seating area.
A hose that crosses the wrong ground gets left coiled up, which has the same effect on the growing as having no hose at all.
Consider whether rainwater could be collected from a nearby roof, and note what that would need in terms of space, a firm base and access.
Any connection to a roof, downpipe or existing drainage should be discussed with a qualified professional before it is planned or ordered.
Ask what watering the proposed arrangement needs at its most demanding point, rather than what it needs on an ordinary day.
Raised beds typically dry out faster than open ground, and it is the peak demand that determines whether the whole arrangement is workable.
Write down who waters when the household is away, and whether that person could find and operate everything without being talked through it.
Absent watering cover is a frequent reason an early growing season ends badly, and it is a planning question rather than a growing one.
Note where water drains to when the beds are watered heavily, and whether it runs onto a path, a patio or towards a neighbouring plot.
If watering or rainfall sends water towards a building or the plot next door, that is a drainage question for a qualified professional to answer first.
3.Reach into the bed and room to get around it
Bed dimensions are set by arms and wheelbarrows, not by drawings. Test the geometry physically before anything is built.
Decide how far you are willing to reach into a bed from its edge, and whether every part of it must be workable without standing on the soil.
Reach determines bed width more than any other factor, and beds that are too wide end up compacted straight down the middle.
Note who will actually be using the beds, including whether anyone gardens seated, finds kneeling difficult or works one-handed.
If someone gardens seated or cannot kneel, put the working height and approach to a qualified professional rather than settling it from a catalogue drawing.
Walk the gaps you are imagining between beds while pushing a loaded wheelbarrow, and note every point where it would not turn or would clip an edge.
Barrow access between beds is repeatedly set out too tight, and unlike most other things it becomes very difficult to widen once the beds are built and filled.
Consider whether the strips between beds need a firm surface, and note how that ground behaves when it is wet and walked on repeatedly.
The ground between beds takes concentrated traffic in wet conditions, which is exactly when growing needs most attention.
Record whether you might want to move or dismantle the beds later, and be realistic about whether that is possible once they are full.
A filled bed is effectively permanent, so its position deserves considerably more thought than its construction usually gets.
Note the orientation of the beds relative to the sun, and consider whether taller growing at one end would shade everything behind it.
4.Fill volume, delivery access and settling
Filling raised beds is a logistics problem before it is a growing problem. Work out how the material gets in and what happens to it afterwards.
Ask what volume of fill each bed would take, and where a delivery of that material would be tipped and stood while it is barrowed in.
Owners often plan the beds carefully and only then discover there is nowhere for a delivery to sit while it is moved into place.
Ask the supplier what access and standing space a delivery needs, and confirm nothing blocks a shared access or a neighbour before ordering.
Walk the route material would take from the road to the beds, noting gates, steps, soft ground, corners and anything that would need protecting.
The narrowest point on that route decides how the material actually arrives, and it is almost always a gate or a side return.
Consider whether soil already on site could form part of the fill, and ask a qualified professional whether it is suitable for what you intend to grow.
Take the question of what may be in your existing soil to a qualified professional, especially on a plot whose earlier use nobody can account for.
Write down whether the ground under the beds stays exactly as it is, or whether something has to happen to it before the beds go on top.
What happens beneath the bed affects drainage and rooting, and it is one of the details most often left unspoken between owner and installer.
Ask how far the fill level drops as the material settles, and what topping up would involve each year in both material and effort.
Fill settles noticeably, and the ongoing topping up is rarely mentioned when the beds are first being discussed.
Record whether the bed sides will be in contact with damp soil on the inner face, and ask what that means for how long they last.
The material in permanent contact with damp fill determines the working life of the bed, and it is worth asking rather than assuming.
5.Trees, hedges and what competes underground
What is happening below ground next to the beds is invisible and decisive. Record what is nearby and take tree questions to the right person.
Look up from each candidate bed position and record what is directly overhead, and whether the canopy edge sits inside or well outside the area you have in mind.
Where a canopy edge falls is a reasonable first indication of where roots are likely to be active, and it is something an owner can observe without any expertise.
Note where hedges run along the boundary and how close the proposed beds would sit to them along their whole length.
Hedge roots extend well beyond the visible line and compete strongly for water, which affects everything planted anywhere near them.
Ask a qualified arborist whether any nearby tree makes the proposed location unsuitable, rather than forming that judgement yourself.
Never plan cutting, root severing or any tree work yourself; a qualified arborist should advise and protection status must be confirmed locally.
Write down where leaf fall, needle drop or fruit fall lands, and whether any of it would land directly on the growing area.
Material dropping onto beds is a recurring clearing job rather than a one-off, and it can often be avoided simply by shifting the position.
Consider whether anyone is proposing to build a bed over visible roots, and ask what the consequences would be for both the tree and the bed.
Placing fill over the root zone of a tree can harm it; that is a question for a qualified arborist before any bed position is agreed.
Note whether a neighbour's planting overhangs the proposed site, and record the conversation you would need to have about it.
Overhanging planting from a neighbouring plot involves the neighbour and, where a tree is protected, the local authority; confirm before acting.
6.Tools, storage and the mess that comes with growing
Growing generates bulky, awkward, unattractive equipment. Decide where it lives before the beds are built rather than afterwards.
Write down where tools, canes, netting, pots, trays and bags of material would live, and whether that place already exists and is empty.
Growing generates a surprising volume of bulky odds and ends, and unplanned storage for them ends up on the patio or against a wall.
Consider where compost or garden waste would be kept, and how far that is from both the beds and the kitchen door.
A compost position that is inconvenient from the kitchen simply does not get used, which is a layout failure rather than a discipline failure.
Note whether the growing area is visible from the main windows, and whether the practical clutter of it would matter to anyone in the household.
The gap between how a growing area is imagined and how it actually looks in use causes more friction than the growing itself ever does.
Record whether you need somewhere to pot up, wash produce or stand trays, and note where that would be and what it would stand on.
Ask what protection the growing area needs from pets, birds or wildlife, and where that equipment would be stored when it is not in use.
Netting, cloches and frames sit off the beds for a good part of the year, and somewhere to keep them is almost never included in the original plan.
Consider whether power or lighting would be wanted near the growing area, and note what supply already exists anywhere nearby.
Any outdoor power or lighting is work for a qualified electrician, and what applies locally must be confirmed before it is planned.
7.Honest upkeep across the growing year
The size of a growing area should follow the attention available, not the other way round. Write down the honest answer.
Be honest about how often you will actually be in the garden during the busiest growing period, and write that down before deciding on scale.
Growing areas need attention in short, frequent bursts rather than in occasional long sessions, and the honest answer should shape their size.
Decide and record what happens to the beds when nothing is growing in them, and who is responsible for them during that stretch.
Consider starting with fewer beds than you want, and ask whether the layout would allow more to be added later without rebuilding anything.
Owners routinely build more growing area than they can keep up with in the first year, and a layout that can grow avoids that outcome.
Write down which member of the household owns the routine, and what would happen to the beds if their interest faded.
A growing area with no named owner reverts to weeds quickly, and naming the person early is a useful reality check on the whole idea.
Note what the growing area would look like from the house during the dormant part of the year, when there is nothing in it.
Off-season appearance is what you actually look at for a large share of the year, and it is rarely discussed at the design stage at all.
Ask what upkeep the bed structure itself needs, separately from the growing that happens inside it.
The frame, the strips between beds and the surrounding edges each need their own attention, which owners consistently forget to allow effort for.

- Whatever you know or hold about the previous use of the land and the garden

- Any existing drainage, service or outdoor power information for the garden

- Does anything about a growing area here need checking with the local authority
- What would you change about the bed widths and the gaps between them

- Whether existing soil is suitable for growing food cannot be judged from a checklist and needs qualified advice, especially where the land has an unknown history.
- Any work near a tree, including placing fill over its root zone, must be discussed with a qualified arborist and confirmed against local tree protection rules.
- Outdoor power, water connections and drainage raised in these prompts are questions for qualified trades, not conclusions you should act on yourself.
