1.Reading where daylight enters a compact room
Small rooms are often described as dark when the real issue is the shape and height of the opening they already have.
Note which direction the main opening faces and mark on a rough sketch the part of the floor that takes direct sun at different points in the day.
Owners often describe a room on the strength of one bright hour, and the sketch quietly corrects that impression.
Record how much of the opening is glass and how much is frame, since a small window loses proportionally more of its area to the frame than a large one.
Two openings of the same overall size can let in noticeably different amounts of light depending on how they are divided.
Note how high the head of the window sits, because light reaching the back of a compact room depends far more on that height than on the width of the glass.

2.What stands outside and takes the light away
Most daylight problems in compact rooms are caused by something outside the glass rather than anything inside it.
Stand at the opening and write down what faces it: a wall, a fence, a neighbouring building, a balcony, a garage or open sky.
What the window looks at is the single largest influence on how much daylight reaches the room behind it.
Note whether anything overhangs the opening, such as a balcony above, a canopy, a deep eaves or a projecting upper floor.
Overhead obstructions take more light than owners expect because they block the brightest part of the sky.
Record whether a tree outside loses its leaves, since a room can be reasonably bright in winter and noticeably dim once the leaves return.
Observations made in one condition can be badly misleading, and a note about the tree explains a later change nobody understands.
Note how the room feels when the sky is fully overcast, which is the condition most of the light in the room is actually seen in.
Rooms and finishes chosen on a bright day frequently disappoint in the flat light the room usually has.
Consider whether anything outside is likely to change, and ask what could be found out locally about development near this opening.
A daylight decision made now can be undone by something built outside, and it is worth knowing what is known.

Note which adjoining rooms have their own daylight, and whether light already reaches this space through a door that is usually left open.
Borrowed daylight is real but conditional, and it disappears the moment somebody needs the door closed.
Consider whether a glazed door, an internal opening or a fanlight has ever been discussed, and ask a qualified professional what would be involved here.
Internal openings are sometimes a straightforward option and sometimes not, and only someone on site can tell you which.

4.Glare, screens and the hours the room stops working
In a compact room there is rarely a choice of position, so glare has to be understood rather than avoided by moving.
Sit where a screen would go and note whether the window falls behind it, beside it or behind you, since each of the three creates a different problem.
There is usually only one workable position in a small room, and knowing which one it is shapes every other decision.
Note the times when low sun comes straight into the room, and write down what would be needed at the opening if it does.
Low sun at one part of the day is enough to make a position unusable, and it is invisible on any drawing.
Record whether a mirror, a gloss cupboard front or a pale worktop throws light into your eyes at any point in the day.
Reflected glare is often blamed on the window when the actual cause is a surface chosen for a different reason.
Consider whether the brightest position in the room is also the position you would want to occupy, since the two are frequently in conflict.
The corner with the most light is often the one with the least usable wall behind it, and something has to give.
Note how early in the day the room needs artificial light, and whether that is true all through the room or only at its far end.
A room that needs a lamp for most of its use is a lighting brief as much as a daylight one, and saying so early helps.
Write down whether anyone in the household finds the room uncomfortably bright or gloomy, and treat that as a requirement rather than a preference.
A stated requirement survives into the design; an unstated preference is silently designed out.
5.Window coverings with no wall to spare
Compact rooms rarely have anywhere for a covering to go when it is fully open, and that constraint is discovered late.
Note where a blind or curtain would gather when fully open, and whether that would sit over part of the glass in an opening this size.
A covering stacked across the glass can take a meaningful share of the daylight from a small window.
Consider whether there is any wall beside the opening for a curtain to stack onto, since compact rooms very often have none at all.
Without stacking space, the choice of covering narrows sharply, and it is far better to know that before shopping.
Write down whether a covering would have to be operated from a seated position or across furniture, and ask suppliers what that means for the options.
A covering that is awkward to reach is left in one position permanently, which defeats the point of having it.
What a particular blind, track or covering can do in this opening should be confirmed with the supplier or fitter rather than assumed.
Note whether the opening is obstructed by a radiator, a projecting sill or a deep skirting that a full length covering would meet.
These obstructions decide the length and type of covering long before appearance is considered.

In a small room the surfaces do a disproportionate share of the work in moving daylight around.
Note the colour and finish of the wall directly opposite the opening, since that surface does most of the work in spreading light into the room.
A dark wall facing the window absorbs light that a small room can ill afford to lose.
Consider whether the ceiling is a light colour, because in a compact room the ceiling bounces daylight further than any wall does.
Ceilings are often left out of a colour discussion entirely and then blamed for the room feeling low and dim.
Note whether the floor covering is dark, and how much light it absorbs before anything else has a chance to reflect it.
Floors take the light that arrives first, and a dark one changes the whole character of a small room.
Consider whether a mirror would return daylight or simply reflect the darkest wall, and check what it would actually be facing from where you sit.
Mirrors are treated as a general remedy for small rooms, but they only help when they face something worth reflecting.
Note where fitted joinery is being considered, and whether a dark run of it would sit exactly where daylight currently reaches.
Storage placed in the lit part of a small room is a decision worth making knowingly rather than by default.

Notes without their conditions attached are almost impossible to interpret afterwards.
