This is general planning preparation. These situations need a qualified professional, and often the relevant authority.
- Resolving what weight a drawer, runner or shelf can carry, which the supplier and manufacturer must confirm
- Ruling on what may be placed beside or beneath an appliance, which is for the appliance manufacturer and installer
- Questions of reach, lifting or physical strain, which belong with a suitably qualified professional rather than a planning list
- Assessing what can be fixed into a wall for open shelving, which a qualified professional must establish

1.Deciding what belongs in a drawer rather than a cupboard
Drawers are not automatically better than cupboards. They are better for particular things, and the difference is worth naming.
List the things you currently crouch down to find at the back of a base cupboard, since those are the strongest argument for drawers.
Anything routinely lost at the back of a cupboard is the clearest evidence you can bring to a design conversation.
Decide which items genuinely suit a cupboard, such as tall bottles, a bin or a stack of trays, rather than converting everything.
Kitchens made entirely of drawers lose the tall spaces that certain awkward objects need.
Note that drawers use part of the cabinet in sides and mechanism, and ask the supplier what that means for what will fit inside.
The internal dimension of a drawer is smaller than the cabinet, which matters for anything measured tightly.
Consider whether pans are better in a deep drawer or on a shelf, based on how heavy yours are and how often each is used.
Heavy pans in a deep drawer are easy to reach and heavy to slide, so the answer depends on the pans you own.
Note which cupboard you open most often and consider whether it would work better as drawers in exactly the same position.
Converting the busiest cupboard is usually the change that makes the most difference to daily use.
Record any item that has defeated every storage arrangement you have tried, and describe precisely why it does.
The awkward object is the sharpest test of a proposed arrangement, and designers can usually solve it if they know about it.
2.Depth, width and what a drawer is asked to carry
Drawers are specified by the cabinet and filled by the household. The two have to be introduced to each other early.
Measure your largest and most awkward items rather than assuming a drawer of a usual size will take them.
Stock pots, baking trays and large lids are the items that most often fail to fit what was assumed.
Ask the supplier what a drawer and its runners are intended to carry, and describe what you plan to put in it.
Capacity varies between systems, and the question is much easier to ask now than to resolve after fitting.
The capacity of drawers and runners comes from the manufacturer and must be confirmed with the supplier.
Note whether a deep drawer would be used to its full depth or would simply allow things to pile on top of each other.
Very deep drawers can be as bad as deep cupboards, because the lower layer becomes invisible.
Consider whether one wide drawer is easier or harder to use than two narrower ones for the things you actually store.
Wide drawers suit large flat items and let smaller ones slide about, which is a genuine trade rather than a preference.
Note whether the drawers open fully, since a drawer that does not extend completely leaves its back permanently awkward.
Partial extension quietly reduces usable storage and is easy to miss when looking at an empty display.
Consider what sits above and below each drawer, since a drawer beneath an oven has constraints of its own.
Positions adjacent to appliances often limit what the drawer can be used for, and it is worth establishing that early.
What may be placed adjacent to or beneath an appliance is for the appliance manufacturer and installer to confirm.
3.Dividers and the things that travel about inside
The inside of a drawer is decided once and lived with daily. It repays a little thought about what will actually be in there.
Decide which drawers need dividers and which are better left open, based on what actually moves around inside them.
Dividers help small items and get in the way of large ones, so the answer differs drawer by drawer.
Note whether cutlery, utensils and small tools each need their own arrangement, or whether one drawer could sensibly take them all.
Combining them saves a drawer and slows down every meal, which some households mind and others do not.
Consider whether dividers are fixed or movable, since fixed dividers commit you to one way of storing things.
What you store changes over time, and movable dividers absorb that without any further work.
Note anything heavy that slides when a drawer is opened quickly, and consider what would hold it in place.
Heavy items sliding forward is both irritating and the cause of most damage to drawer fronts from the inside.
Consider whether an inner drawer is genuinely useful for what you own, or simply adds another layer to look through.
Inner drawers are excellent for small flat items and unhelpful for anything that has to be seen at a glance.
Note what you would want to see the moment a drawer is opened, since anything below the top layer is effectively hidden.
Planning the top layer deliberately is what makes a drawer feel organised rather than merely full.
4.Shelves you adjust and shelves you never touch
Adjustable shelving is sold as flexibility and is almost never adjusted once the kitchen is loaded. Plan for that.
Decide which shelves genuinely need to be adjustable, accepting that most shelves are never moved once a kitchen is in use.
Knowing which shelves matter lets you fix the rest at the height that suits their contents from the start.
Note the tallest thing that has to stand upright on a shelf, and check it against the spacing you are being shown.
One tall item usually sets the spacing for a whole cupboard, and it is worth identifying which one.
Consider whether a shelf would be better at half depth, since a deep shelf hides whatever ends up at the back of it.
Half depth shelves in a deep cupboard often store more usefully than full depth ones, because everything stays visible.
Ask what the shelf is made of and what it is intended to carry, particularly where anything heavy is planned.
Shelves that sag are a common complaint and usually the result of an assumption rather than a question.
What a shelf can carry depends on its material, span and fixings, and must be confirmed with the supplier.
Note whether open shelving is wanted anywhere, and consider what it would collect in a room that produces grease and steam.
Open shelves near cooking need their contents used often enough that nothing sits gathering a film.
Whether open shelving can be fixed to a particular wall is for a qualified professional to establish before it is planned.
Consider how each shelf would be cleaned, particularly where it meets the back and the sides of the unit.
The junction at the back of a shelf is where crumbs collect and where most shelves are hardest to wipe.
5.Corners, blind spaces and what disappears into them
Every kitchen has corners, and every corner is a decision. Make it deliberately rather than accepting whatever is drawn.
Note every internal corner in the layout and ask what is proposed to happen inside each of them.
Corners are drawn quickly and are where the largest volume of unreachable space is created.
Consider whether a corner mechanism suits what you would store there, or whether the corner is better left as plain space.
Mechanisms hold less than the volume they occupy, which is a fair trade only for the right contents.
Note that corner mechanisms need adjacent doors and drawers to be clear when they operate, and ask what that means here.
A mechanism that cannot be operated without opening something else first is a daily irritation.
Clearances required by corner mechanisms should be confirmed with the supplier before the layout is settled.
Consider what would live in a corner you can barely reach, and check that it is something genuinely used rarely.
Corners work well for occasional items and badly for anything wanted in the middle of cooking.
Note whether a corner unit door and the adjacent drawer collide, and ask to see the arrangement demonstrated rather than described.
This collision is common, predictable and much easier to avoid before the layout is fixed.
Record whether you would rather lose the corner entirely than live with a mechanism you find awkward to use.
Some households genuinely prefer a filler to a mechanism, and saying so early saves a poor compromise.
6.Pull-outs, mechanisms and what happens when one fails
Internal fittings are demonstrated empty and lived with full. Ask to see them the way you will actually use them.
Ask to operate every mechanism proposed for your kitchen rather than accepting a description or an illustration of it.
The feel of a mechanism is the whole point of it, and it cannot be conveyed in any other way.
Note whether a mechanism feels reassuring or flimsy when it is loaded, and ask for it to be loaded before you judge.
Empty fittings all feel much the same, and the differences appear with weight in them.
Ask what happens if a mechanism fails, and whether it can be replaced without removing the cabinet or the worktop.
Fittings are the parts most likely to need attention while the rest of the kitchen is still perfectly serviceable.
Repair and replacement of internal mechanisms is for the supplier to explain, including how long parts are expected to be available.
Consider whether this household would use a mechanism as intended, or work around it once the novelty has passed.
Fittings that require a particular habit tend to be abandoned, which wastes both the space and the choice.
Note anything that requires two hands to operate, since kitchen storage is usually opened with one hand only.
Two handed fittings are used far less than expected, particularly during cooking.
Consider whether a plain shelf or a deep drawer would do the same job as a mechanism you are being shown.
The simple option is often as effective, easier to clean and has nothing in it to fail.
7.The top shelf and the bottom drawer nobody uses
Every kitchen has storage at the extremes of reach. Decide what goes there rather than letting it become dead space.
Note who in the household is shortest and what they can reach comfortably without standing on something.
Storage above comfortable reach for the main cook is storage that will not be used in practice.
Record what you would put on the highest shelf, and check that it is genuinely something needed only rarely.
If nothing sensible comes to mind, the shelf is probably in the wrong place or the wrong height.
Consider what would be stored in the lowest drawer, and whether somebody would be crouching to reach it several times a day.
Frequently used items in the lowest position are a source of daily strain that is entirely avoidable.
Note whether anything heavy is planned for a high position, and consider what lifting it down would actually involve.
Bringing a heavy item down from a high shelf is awkward for most people, so its position deserves a deliberate decision.
Where heavy items can sensibly be stored for a particular person is worth raising with a suitably qualified professional.
Consider whether a step would be needed to reach the highest storage, and decide where it would live in the room.
A step with nowhere to go stands in a walkway, which is worse than the storage it makes reachable.
Note whether wall units sit above a worktop that people have to lean over in order to reach them.
Reaching over a deep worktop adds a surprising amount to the effective height of a wall unit.
8.Writing the contents plan before cabinetry is ordered
The most useful document in a kitchen order is a plain list of what goes where. Very few owners produce one.
Write a list of what goes in every cupboard and drawer before the kitchen is ordered, rather than after it is fitted.
Writing it beforehand reveals the gaps while the arrangement can still be changed without any consequence.
Mark on the plan where the everyday items live, and check that each sits near the place it is actually used.
Proximity to the task is what makes a kitchen feel efficient, and it can be tested entirely on paper.
Note anything on your list that has nowhere to go, since that is precisely the gap the plan is hiding.
Items with no home end up on the worktop, which is how a new kitchen starts looking cluttered immediately.
Record what you intend to get rid of, and be realistic about whether it will genuinely leave the house.
Storage plans built on a clear out that never happens fail on the first day the kitchen is loaded.
Ask the designer to check your contents list against the storage being proposed, rather than against a general allowance.
A specific check against real contents catches the shortfalls that a general assessment never will.
Keep the contents plan with the order paperwork so it can be referred to while the kitchen is being fitted.
The plan is most useful at the point where somebody is deciding which unit goes where.

Having these to hand usually makes the first conversation shorter and more useful.
- A written list of what has to be stored, grouped by where it is used
- Measurements of your largest and most awkward items, taken rather than estimated
- Photographs of the current cupboards and drawers with their contents visible
- Supplier information on drawer systems, runners and internal fittings
- A marked up plan showing what is intended to live in each unit
- Notes from operating the proposed mechanisms yourself, loaded rather than empty
Records
Decisions to record before work begins
Write these down in your own words, with the date, so everyone is working from the same version.
- Which base units are drawers and which remain cupboards, and why
- What happens inside every corner in the layout
- Which shelves are fixed and which genuinely need to be adjustable
- Which internal fittings and mechanisms are wanted, and which were declined
- What is intended to be stored at the highest and lowest positions
- What is being disposed of before the new kitchen is loaded

Blind spots
Commonly overlooked items
- The internal dimension of a drawer being smaller than the cabinet around it
- Drawers that do not extend fully, leaving the back permanently awkward
- The corner unit door that collides with the drawer beside it
- Heavy items sliding forward every time a drawer is opened quickly
- The step needed to reach the top shelf, and where it would be kept
- Items on the list that turn out to have nowhere to go at all
- A clear out that everybody agreed to and nobody carried out
