1.Walking the routes people actually take
Switch positions follow movement. Walking the property with a notebook produces better evidence than any amount of thinking about a plan.
Walk in from the front door after dark exactly as you normally would, and note every point where you needed light and what you reached for.
The arrival sequence is the most repeated journey in a property and the one most often left to whoever wires it.
Walk the route you take when going to bed, noting which lights you switch off and in what order, and where you are left in the dark.
The shutting-down route reveals missing controls better than anything else, because it is walked with no light ahead.
Record any point where you have to double back to switch something off, since that describes a control in the wrong place rather than a habit.
Doubling back is so normalised that owners rarely mention it, yet it is exactly the problem worth fixing.
Note the routes taken between rooms during an ordinary evening, such as from the seating area to the kitchen, and what is lit along the way.
Internal journeys need light at both ends and in between, and they cross the boundaries of the room-by-room brief.
Record the routes taken out of the building after dark, to a bin, a shed, a car or a garden, and how light is switched for each of them.
Controls serving anything beyond the walls of the building are a question for a qualified electrician, working to whatever applies where the property is.
Ask other members of the household to describe their own routes rather than assuming everyone moves through the property as you do.
Households routinely discover that two people use entirely different doors for the same journey.
2.What your hands are doing when you reach for a switch
A control that needs a free hand at a moment when nobody has one is a control that gets bypassed for the life of the building.
Note what people are typically carrying at each switch position, whether that is shopping, laundry, a drink, a child or a pet.
The load determines whether a switch can be operated at all, and it varies enormously between the doorways of one property.
Record where a switch is reached with wet, floury or dirty hands, and note what currently gets marked or avoided as a result.
The wall around such a switch shows the evidence, and the habit will carry on whatever ends up in that position.
Note where people currently operate a switch with an elbow, a shoulder or a knuckle, since that says something specific about the position.
Improvised operation is a clear signal that either the position or the type of control does not suit the moment it is used in.
Record which switches are found by feel in the dark, and describe what the hand is using as a reference, such as the edge of a door frame.
Consistency matters more than elegance for a switch found by touch, and moving it without thought leads to a long spell of fumbling.
Note where somebody is holding a door open while reaching for a switch, and whether the door itself blocks the reach.
This is easy to observe at home and almost impossible to see on a drawing, which is why it survives into so many finished rooms.
Record the entrances used while wearing gloves or with both arms full, since those points may need a different kind of control entirely.
Naming the situation rather than proposing a solution leaves room for options you may not know exist.
3.Rooms entered from more than one direction
Every additional door multiplies the switching question. Record the doors honestly, including the ones you rarely use.
List every door into each room, including doors from a hallway, a garden, a utility space or a room you pass through.
Rooms with three ways in are common in altered properties and are frequently drawn as though they had one.
Note which door each person uses most often for each room, since the busiest door is not always the one nearest the main hallway.
The habitual door deserves the primary control, and habit rarely matches the plan drawing.
Record where you would want to be able to switch the same light from more than one position, and say what journey makes that necessary.
Stating the journey rather than requesting the arrangement lets a professional propose whatever suits your installation.
Note any room people walk through to reach another, and how the through-route is lit without lighting the whole room.
Rooms used as corridors are lit far more often than they are occupied, and that has a real effect on what is wanted.
Record how the stairs are lit and from where, at both the top and the bottom, and whether anyone ever climbs them in the dark.
How stairs and changes of level should be lit and switched is governed by requirements that vary by location and must be confirmed locally.
In an open-plan space, note where one area ends and another begins in your own use, and where you would expect the control for each.
Open-plan controls placed by geometry rather than by use tend to leave one area with no obvious switch at all.
4.Switching at night and beside beds
Night controls are used half asleep by people who cannot see them. That is a stricter test than any daytime requirement.
Record who gets up during the night, where they go, and what they currently switch on or deliberately avoid switching on.
Most people choose darkness over a light that is too bright, which means the existing control is failing rather than unused.
Note what each bedside control has to compete with for space, such as a book, a glass, a phone and whatever else lives on the surface.
A control that is regularly buried under objects is effectively absent, whatever the drawing shows.
Record whether both sides of a shared bed need their own control, and whether one person needs to switch off a light the other left on.
This is one of the most common domestic complaints and one of the easiest to raise before positions are fixed.
Note which controls a child needs to reach themselves and which you would rather they did not, and pass both on as observations.
Children move through a property at a different height and with different confidence, which changes what a control has to do.
Record any light that is deliberately left on all night and why, since that is a requirement rather than a habit to be designed away.
Schemes that ignore the light somebody needs left on simply get overridden on the first night.
Note where switching on a light for one person disturbs another, and describe the situation rather than proposing how to solve it.
The solution may involve position, grouping or something else entirely, and that choice belongs with the professional.
5.Positions that fight the doors, furniture and joinery
Switch positions are agreed early and then quietly contradicted by everything that arrives afterwards.
Write down which way each door swings and what that leaves reachable on entry, since a door opening against a switch hides it completely.
Door swings are changed during projects more often than owners expect, and the switch position rarely follows.
Mark on the sketch which walls will carry tall furniture, and check whether any planned control would end up behind it.
Wardrobes and bookcases arrive after first fix, and a control behind one is effectively lost for good.
Note where joinery, panelling or a fitted headboard will meet a wall, and raise any control on that wall as a question in advance.
Controls emerging awkwardly from panelling are a familiar sight and are entirely avoidable by asking early.
How a control can be arranged where it meets joinery is for the electrician and the maker to agree between them, not for the owner to specify.
Record any existing switch that sits behind an open door and how you currently deal with it, since the same mistake repeats easily.
Recording the existing failure gives the professional something concrete to avoid rather than a general preference.
Note where several controls sit together and whether anyone can remember which is which, including visitors using the room for the first time.
Groups of identical controls are guessed at rather than used, and the guessing continues indefinitely.
Record whether you want controls in the same relative position in every room, and note where the building makes that impossible.
Consistency is worth a great deal in the dark, but it is a decision to state rather than something that happens by itself.
6.Controlling the lamps as well as the ceiling fittings
Households light rooms with portable lamps and then walk round the room switching each one by hand. That is a control question too.
Count how many lamps you switch individually by hand each evening, and note the order you go round the room in.
A room requiring a circuit of the furniture every evening is describing a control problem rather than a preference for lamps.
Note which lamp switches are awkward to reach because the lamp sits behind a sofa, under a shelf or on a shelf above shoulder height.
The inconvenient lamp is the one that stops being used, and the room slowly loses the layer it was meant to provide.
Record which lamp positions you would like to be able to control from the room entrance, and treat how that is achieved as an open question.
Whether and how an outlet or lamp position can be controlled from elsewhere is a matter for a suitably qualified electrician to determine.
Note which lamps get switched on early and stay on because nobody wants to walk back across the room to turn them off.
This tells you which positions would benefit most from being controlled from somewhere else.
Record where a lamp cable currently crosses a route people walk, and raise it as something to resolve rather than working around it.
Where power can be provided so that a cable does not cross a walking route is for a suitably qualified electrician to advise on.
7.Seeing positions marked before anything is fixed
A position on a drawing and the same position on a wall are two different experiences. Ask to see the second one.
Ask whether positions can be marked on the actual walls for you to see and comment on before anything is fixed in place.
Standing in the room with the positions marked reveals problems that no drawing makes obvious, and it is a reasonable thing to request.
Walk your recorded routes again once positions are marked out, carrying something, rather than judging the marks while standing still.
Marks are usually judged by people standing empty-handed in the middle of the room, which is the one situation that never occurs afterwards.
Check the marked positions against your furniture sketch on site, particularly on any wall intended to carry something tall.
This is the last easy moment to catch a control that would otherwise sit behind a wardrobe for as long as the room lasts.
Ask at what point control positions have to be final and what a change after that involves, then record the answer in writing.
First fix is a hard boundary in most projects, and knowing where it falls prevents decisions being made under pressure.
The point beyond which a position cannot easily be moved is something only the professionals carrying out the work can tell you for your project.
Photograph the marked positions once agreed, with enough of the room in shot to show where each mark actually sits.
Photographs of agreed marking-out settle disputes later that no verbal agreement survives.
Ask who will tell you, and how, if a position you asked for turns out not to be workable once work has started.
Positions get quietly moved on site, and agreeing in advance how you will be told keeps the decision with you.

- Photographs of every existing switch in position, with the surrounding wall in shot
- A sketch per room marking door swings, tall furniture and the walls to keep clear

- Photographs of the marked-out positions once they have been agreed on site
