This is general planning preparation. These situations need a qualified professional, and often the relevant authority.

The checklist
Work through the sections
Tick the boxes on paper or on screen — nothing is stored, so print the page if you want to keep your marks.
1.Mapping who uses each store and from what height
Reach is personal. Write down the actual people rather than an imagined user, because storage gets designed for whoever is described.
List everyone who uses each store, including children, older relatives and anyone who visits often, and note their rough heights beside their names.
A store designed around the tallest adult quietly excludes everyone else from using it properly.
For each person, note where their comfortable reach begins and ends by having them stand at the store and show you, rather than estimating it.
Demonstrated reach is different from remembered reach, and it takes moments to record.
Note who cannot comfortably lift their arms above shoulder height, and mark which stores that rules out for them entirely.
This one observation changes where heavy and everyday items should sit far more than any layout preference.
Note who finds bending or kneeling difficult, and mark which low storage they cannot realistically use.
Low storage is often treated as unlimited capacity when for some of the household it is unusable.
Where reach is affected by a health condition or a disability, the arrangement should be discussed with a suitably qualified professional.
Decide who uses each store most often, and record that the arrangement is set for that person rather than being a compromise nobody chose.
Naming the primary user prevents an average arrangement that suits no one in particular.
Decide which stores a child needs to use unaided, and note what currently happens when they cannot reach, which is usually climbing.
Storage a child can reach is storage a child can tidy away, which changes how the room behaves.
2.How each front opens and what that movement needs
Before you reach the contents, something has to move out of the way. That movement needs its own space and its own decision.
Note the arc each door needs to open fully, and stand in that arc to see whether you have to step backwards before you can reach in.
Stepping back to open a door is the small daily friction that makes people stop using a cupboard.
Note where two fronts, or a front and a room door, would open into each other, and decide which of them changes.
Clashes are easily solved on a drawing and awkward to solve once anything has been made.
Note how far a drawer comes out when it is fully open, and whether the space in front allows anyone to stand there while it is out.
Deep drawers in a narrow space cannot be opened fully, which means the back of them is never used.
If lifting fronts are being considered, note who has to reach the handle when it is open and whether the shortest user can bring it down again.
Fronts that lift out of reach when open are a common regret and are decided at the mechanism stage.
How any lifting or sliding mechanism behaves in use, and what it will take, is for the supplier or maker to confirm.
If sliding fronts are being considered, note that half the store is always covered, and decide whether that suits what is kept behind each panel.
Sliding fronts suit some contents and are a permanent irritation for others.
Note how each front is gripped and whether anyone in the household would struggle with that grip, including with wet or full hands.
Push catches and recessed grips behave very differently depending on whose hands are using them.
3.Using storage with your hands full and in a hurry
Storage is rarely approached empty handed. Describe the actual moment of use, including what you are carrying.
For each store, write down what you are typically carrying at the moment you reach it, whether a basket, a child, a hot pan or a full bag.
This single note rules out several otherwise attractive fronts and fittings before anything is drawn.
Note whether there is any surface within reach to set things down while a store is opened, or whether everything goes on the floor first.
A setting down surface is a requirement in its own right and is almost always left out of a brief.
Note which stores are used in poor light or at night, and whether the light switch can be reached before the store is opened.
Stores used in the dark are used by feel, which changes what arrangement works inside them.
Mark the stores that must be opened, used and closed with a single hand, and note who is doing that and what they are holding.
One handed use is normal in kitchens, entrances and nurseries and is rarely stated as a requirement.
Note where storage is opened with wet or dirty hands, since that affects both what is touched and what shows the marks.
Wet hands change which grip works and which finish will look tired quickly.
Consider how easily each thing goes back rather than how easily it comes out, since storage fails at the returning step far more often.
If returning something takes more than one movement, it stays on a surface instead.
4.Depth, corners and the space nobody can see into
Volume is not capacity. The parts of a store you cannot see or reach are storage in name only.
Note how deep each store is and how far into it you can actually reach without moving anything that sits in front.
The difference between the depth and the reachable depth is dead volume you paid for in space.
Note where things are already stored two deep, and decide whether that arrangement is acceptable or is why items get forgotten.
Anything behind something else is effectively archived, whether or not that was intended.
Note any corner in the run and ask what is proposed to make it reachable, rather than accepting a corner that is filled and never opened.
Corners are the classic dead spot, and how they are handled is a decision made before manufacture.
How a corner arrangement or mechanism performs in use is for the maker or supplier to confirm for that product.
Note which stores you cannot see into once you are standing at them, particularly high shelves and deep low cupboards.
Storage used blind needs different contents from storage that can be scanned at a glance.
Decide what sits above eye level and what sits below knee level, and accept that both are used less than anything in between.
Allocating those bands deliberately is what keeps everyday items in the easiest positions.
Note the part of a store hidden behind the door leaf when it is only partly open, since that portion is used least of all.
Wide fronts create a strip of storage that is only reachable when the door is opened right back.
5.Standing on something to reach the top
High storage is counted as capacity in almost every brief and used in almost none. Be honest about it now.
Ask each person outright whether they would go and get a step to reach the top shelf, and record the answer they give rather than the intention they express.
Asked directly, most people admit they would not, and that admission is what stops high shelves being counted as everyday capacity.
Decide where a step or short ladder is kept, and note whether it is within a few paces of the storage it serves.
A step kept in another room means the high storage is used once and then abandoned.
Note whether the floor in front of high storage stays clear enough for a step to be placed and stood on.
A step needs floor that is not occupied by furniture, a bin or an open door.
Decide which categories genuinely suit high storage, such as light and rarely used items, and rule out anything heavy or fragile.
Lifting something heavy down at arms length is the moment most storage accidents are described from.
How anything should be lifted or reached at height is a question for a suitably qualified professional, not a design decision.
If boxes sit on top of a run, note their size and weight and how they are brought down, since a box at arms length is heavier than it feels.
Top boxes are a common arrangement and are rarely thought through beyond the space they fill.
Note any handle or catch that would sit above comfortable reach for the shortest regular user, and raise it before the fronts are made.
The height of the handle rather than the shelf is often what puts a store out of use.
6.Testing reach before anything is made
Reach questions can be settled in an afternoon with tape and cardboard, or discovered the hard way once everything is installed.
Mark the proposed heights on the wall with tape and have each person stand at them, so reach is tested rather than discussed.
People discover immediately what they cannot reach, and the marks can be adjusted in moments.
Set a box or a chair at the proposed depth and stand in front of it to feel how much floor is left and how far you must lean.
Depth is the hardest dimension to imagine from a drawing and the easiest to test physically.
Walk through a real routine at the marked positions, carrying what you would normally carry, rather than standing and looking at them.
Routines expose clashes and awkward reaches that a static test never shows.
Photograph each person at the marked positions and keep those images with the notes for the designer or maker.
An image of the shortest user at the proposed height communicates more than a written measurement.
Test reach with the actual items you intend to store, since a full basket or a heavy box changes what is comfortable.
Empty handed reach is always better than reach with something in your arms.
Write down what the tests changed, and give that list to whoever is designing, so the reasoning survives into the drawings.
Without the reasoning, a later change quietly undoes what the tests established.
7.Reach that changes as people grow, age or recover
Households change while storage stays. Note what would have to alter if reach changed, and design in the possibility now.
Note which arrangements are set for a child at their current height, and decide whether they can be adjusted rather than remade.
Adjustable rails and shelves are straightforward to arrange if the question is asked before manufacture.
Consider how the store would be used by someone unable to bend or lift for a while, and note which items would become unreachable.
Temporary changes are common, and a store that fails completely during one is worth rethinking.
Note whether an older relative uses or will use these spaces, and raise their needs with a suitably qualified professional rather than assuming.
Assumptions about what suits someone else are unreliable and easy to avoid by asking.
Assessing what suits a person with particular needs is a matter for a suitably qualified professional and never for a storage plan.
Decide which parts of the storage must be adjustable later, and put that question to the maker before construction rather than afterwards.
Adjustability is built in or it is not available, and it cannot be added to a finished carcass.
Note whether the room might be used differently later, and whether the storage would still be reachable in that arrangement.
A store that only works with the furniture in its current position is more fragile than it appears.
Write down the assumptions about who reaches what, so a future change is made knowingly rather than by accident.
Recorded assumptions are what let somebody else understand why the storage was arranged that way.

Having these to hand usually makes the first conversation shorter and more useful.
- A list of everyone who uses each store, with their rough heights noted
- Photographs of each person standing at the marked proposed heights
- Notes on what is being carried at the moment each store is approached
- Measurements of the clear floor in front of every proposed store
- A note of which stores are currently used and which have quietly fallen out of use
- The written outcome of any reach tests, with what each one changed
Records
Decisions to record before work begins
Write these down in your own words, with the date, so everyone is working from the same version.
- Who each store is arranged for, where more than one person uses it
- Which stores must be usable with one hand and with something being carried
- Which categories are accepted as out of comfortable reach
- Where the step lives and which storage depends on it
- Which parts of the storage must remain adjustable later
- Which fronts open which way, and what had to change to avoid a clash

Bring these to the relevant qualified professional, supplier or authority. Requirements vary by project and location.
- What would you change about these heights given the people who use this room?
- How far will these drawers come out, and is there room to stand while they do?
- What do you propose for the corner so that it does not become dead space?
- Which of these fittings would be difficult to use with one hand?
- Can this arrangement be adjusted later, and what has to be decided now for that?
- How does this front behave when it is open, and who can reach it then?
- What would you need from us to design around the shortest regular user?
- Which of our access questions belongs with a suitably qualified professional instead?
