A roof is the largest single surface most buildings have, and it is usually decided as a technical build-up long before anyone asks what shape it should be. These ideas start from the form and the edge instead — monopitch or butterfly, deep eaves or a clipped verge, a ceiling that follows the rafters or one that hides them.
