Editorial policy

What the Journal is for

Build Design Hub maintains a reference knowledge base: materials, building systems, guides, ideas and checklists that are meant to stay true. The Journal is the other half — developments, research readings, context and platform updates, which are dated by nature.

The division is strict, and it is the main editorial rule here. The Journal does not restate canonical reference content in article form. If an article needs to explain what mineral wool is, it links to the Materials Library record rather than writing a second description that can drift out of step with the first. Duplicating the knowledge base into articles would produce two sources of truth, and two sources of truth is none.

Reporting and interpretation are marked differently

A statement of fact carries a citation. An interpretation does not pretend to. Where the Journal draws a conclusion the sources do not state outright, the prose says so — “this suggests”, “on the available evidence”, “the study does not test” — rather than presenting a reading as a finding.

Calibrated language is used deliberately and not as hedging: commonly, may, often, typically, depends on, should be verified against. In construction the honest answer to most questions is conditional on the project, and writing as though it were not is the most common way technical writing becomes wrong.

The professional boundary

Build Design Hub provides general educational information only. Content does not replace advice from licensed architects, engineers, contractors, electricians, plumbers, legal professionals or other qualified specialists. Building codes, permits, safety requirements and costs vary by location and project.

The Journal does not give instructions where loads, structural safety, fire safety, electrical work, gas, waterproofing, code compliance, hazardous materials or life safety depend on facts specific to a building. It explains how things work and what the considerations are. It does not tell a reader what is safe in their building, because it cannot know.

This boundary is not applied as a warning stapled to every paragraph. It is applied where it is materially relevant, which is the only way a caution keeps any force.

Editorial independence

No commercial relationship — present or future — affects factual conclusions, the ordering of articles, how a material is described, the outcome of a comparison, or any record in the canonical knowledge base.

The Journal does not publish, and has no mechanism to publish:

• sponsored placement or paid editorial;
• pay-to-rank positioning of any kind;
• affiliate-weighted scoring or recommendations;
• manufacturer, supplier or contractor rankings;
• directories of firms presented as editorial judgement.

The Journal is also not a marketplace. It does not list prices, take enquiries, broker work, or connect readers to providers. Where a reader needs a professional, the correct answer is a qualified local professional, and the Journal is not in a position to say which one.

Metrics the Journal will not invent

There is no “Popular”, “Trending” or “Most read” anywhere in this publication, and there will not be one until first-party measurement exists to support it. Those labels are claims about what other readers did. Generating them from publication order or from an editor’s guess would be a fabricated metric presented as social proof, which is a small dishonesty that costs a publication more trust than it gains attention.

“Featured” is used, and it means exactly one thing: an editor chose it. It is not a popularity signal in disguise.

Writing tools and verification

The Journal does not claim that its articles are written without software assistance, because that claim would be unverifiable and publications that make it are frequently wrong. What it does claim is narrower and checkable: every factual assertion is traceable to a named source before publication, and nothing is published on an automated pipeline. Research can be assisted; publication is an explicit editorial act by a person.

Nothing is ever fabricated — not a quotation, a standard, a regulation, a study, a citation, an author, a test result, a price, a project or an outcome. A gap in the evidence is reported as a gap.
