Overview

What cellular pvc trim board is

Cellular PVC exterior board is an extruded foamed PVC section made for outdoor use. The body is a closed-cell foamed polymer that is light for its size, takes a screw, and can be sawn and routed with ordinary tools. What distinguishes the exterior grade is what is on the outside of it: the board is normally UV-stabilised through its body and capped with a bonded foil, film or acrylic skin that forms the weathering surface and the colour or woodgrain texture.

That cap is the part that matters and the part that fails. It is what resists ultraviolet light, what holds the colour, and what keeps the surface looking as it did. A cap that has been cut through, scratched by a tool, abraded during handling or lifted at an edge exposes the foamed body beneath, and a dark-capped board sitting in full sun behaves differently again because it gets hotter. Cut ends leave the cap open, which is why end treatment and the position of joints are real questions rather than details.

It is supplied as a family of pre-formed sections rather than as plain sheet: boards with return legs, boards with drip edges, ventilated sections with integral perforations, and matching trims, corners and joint pieces that are made to go together. Long lengths of PVC move appreciably along their length with temperature, so fixings are made through slotted or oversized holes, at spacings the manufacturer sets, with polymer-headed pins or screws that match the cap. A board pinned tight at both ends has nowhere to go and buckles.

Weathering and exposure
The bonded cap is the weathering surface and the part that carries the colour or texture. Ultraviolet exposure, orientation and the colour chosen all act on it, and a cut, scratched or lifted cap exposes the foamed body underneath.
Installation dependency
Long sections move along their length with temperature, so fixings go through slotted or oversized holes at the spacings the manufacturer sets, and joints are left to accommodate that movement. Fixing tight at both ends is the classic error.
Substrate dependency
The board is only as sound as what it is fixed to. Inspecting the timber or structure behind, and recording its condition, is the decisive step and is exactly the step a covering board makes easy to skip.
Appearance
Colour and texture belong to the cap rather than to the body, so a cut edge, a scratch or a drilled hole reads differently from the face. Trims, corners and joint pieces from the same family are what keep an edge looking continuous.
Repairability
A damaged cap cannot be made good by sanding or filling in the way a painted timber board can. Damaged sections are generally replaced, which makes the availability of matching profiles a live question on any later repair.
Maintenance
The surface is washed rather than repainted, and what is acceptable to wash it with is set by the manufacturer, since abrasives and solvents act on the cap. Nothing about the board removes the need to inspect the roof edge behind it.
