What obscured glass is
Obscured glass is flat glass treated so that it scatters light and breaks up any view through it. The most common form is rolled patterned glass, made by passing the still-soft ribbon between rollers that press a texture into one face while the other stays smooth. Acid etching and sandblasting take a different route, producing a matt surface across an existing pane rather than a moulded relief.
Obscuration is a matter of degree rather than an on or off property. Light textures soften outlines while leaving shapes readable; heavy relief reduces a view to blurred light and movement. The effect also changes with distance, because someone standing close to the glass registers far more than someone across a room, and with the light behind the pane, which is why a screen can read very differently by day and after dark.
Patterned glass is a base product rather than a finished specification. It can be built into a sealed unit, laminated, or heat-treated, although the textured face limits some operations and affects handling. Applied films and printed or etched decoration are a different route again, changing an existing pane rather than the glass itself, and they age and clean differently from a rolled or etched surface.
