Overview
What tactile paving unit is
A tactile paving unit is a paving unit whose face carries a deliberate raised pattern. Everything else about it — that it is a slab or a block, that it is laid on a bedding course, that it is made of concrete or clay or stone — it shares with ordinary paving. What makes it a distinct product is the profile: a field of raised domes, a set of parallel bars, rounded bars, or a pattern of raised flat-topped studs, each of which is a different profile carrying a different meaning in the places where such patterns are used.
The units are made in several bodies and the body changes the product. A moulded concrete unit carries the profile as part of the casting. A clay unit is formed and fired with it. A natural stone unit has the profile cut or drilled into the face, so the pattern is worked into the stone rather than formed in it. A rubber or polymer unit is moulded and is comparatively light. And an overlay unit is a thin plate bonded onto an existing surface rather than a full-depth paving unit at all, which is a genuinely different object with a different set of concerns.
That last distinction is the one most worth holding on to. A full-depth unit is bedded like any other paving and fails, if it fails, the way paving fails: it settles, it rocks, it cracks. An overlay is stuck down onto something else, so it depends on the adhesion between it and whatever is underneath, on the condition of that surface, and on the edges where a raised plate meets the level around it. The two are met at the same decision and answer it quite differently.
Two properties then carry most of the product's working life. The first is that the profile stands proud and is therefore the part that wears: traffic, snow clearance, cleaning and grit all act on the raised pattern before they act on anything else, and a profile that has worn down is no longer the product it was. The second is colour contrast against the surrounding surface, which is a property of the unit chosen and of what it is laid next to, not a preference applied afterwards. Where such units are used, what patterns mean, and what any jurisdiction requires of them are matters for qualified professionals and the relevant authority, and this page addresses none of them.

- Surface wear
- The raised profile takes the wear before anything else does, and a worn profile is no longer performing the job the unit exists to do. How a given body and profile hold up in a trafficked position is the central durability question rather than one of several.
- Appearance
- Colour and its contrast with the surrounding surface are part of the product specification rather than a later preference, and the unit and its neighbours are chosen together. Weathering and soiling change both over time.
- Substrate dependency
- A full-depth unit depends on its bedding and on the compacted construction beneath; an overlay depends on the condition of and the bond to the surface it is stuck onto. These are quite different dependencies.
- Installation dependency
- Levels, falls and the alignment of the profile relative to the direction of travel are set by the designer. Units that rock, sit proud or sit low are installation outcomes rather than product characteristics.
- Weathering and exposure
- Frost, standing water and freeze-thaw act on a profiled external surface, and water sits between raised elements in a way it does not on a flat one. How a particular body behaves belongs to its documentation.
- Repairability
- An individual full-depth unit can be lifted and replaced, which is one of the advantages of unit paving. Matching a weathered unit with a new one, and matching a profile that is no longer produced, are the practical difficulties.
- Maintenance
- Cleaning, sweeping and winter treatment act directly on the raised profile, and the gaps between raised elements collect debris. How the surface will actually be maintained is worth knowing before the body is chosen.
- Documentation
- Documentation covers the body, the profile and its geometry, the colours produced, and what the manufacturer says about bedding, jointing and — for overlays — the surfaces and adhesives involved.
Exposure

- What traffic actually crosses this surface, and does anything turn or brake on it?
- Is the area cleaned mechanically, swept, or treated in winter, and what does that do to a raised profile?
- Does water stand on this surface, and where does it go?
- Is the area shaded or damp enough that growth will take hold between the raised elements?
- How will the surrounding surface weather, given that the contrast depends on both?
Assembly
Substrate and system dependencies
What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.
- A full-depth unit is bedded and jointed like the paving around it, over a construction designed for the loading.
- An overlay depends entirely on the condition of, and the bond to, the surface it is fixed onto, which is examined first.
- Levels and falls are set with the surrounding paving so the units sit flush rather than proud or low.
- Edges and terminations, where a profiled area meets ordinary paving, are detailed rather than left to the laying.
- The joint arrangement affects how debris collects between units and how water leaves the surface.
- Where the unit is in a different material from the surrounding paving, the junction between the two is designed.
Appearance
Appearance and finish considerations
- Contrast against the surrounding surface is part of the specification and depends on both surfaces rather than on the unit alone.
- Both the unit and its surroundings weather and soil, so the contrast seen on day one is not the contrast seen later.
