When the Product Documentation Is the Governing Document

A general reference can describe how an assembly is organised, what each part is for and how the parts depend on one another. There are questions it cannot answer at all, not because the answer is difficult but because the answer belongs to a particular product in a particular arrangement. Recognising which questions those are saves a great deal of effort spent looking in the wrong place.

The published records name them repeatedly. Whether a band will bond to the two substrates it has to join. Whether a primer suits the surface it is being applied to. How much movement a sealant can accommodate. What geometry a proprietary joint requires. What pitch and exposure a covering is offered for. Whether a board can accept the coating applied to it, or the weather it will see before the cladding arrives. In each case the records say the same thing: this is a matter for the manufacturer's documentation and the designer.

Recognising a documentation question

Bond chains are only as good as their weakest link

Wherever something is stuck to something else, the documentation covers a chain rather than a product.
