Overview

What a ceiling joist is

Ceiling joists span between walls and carry the ceiling beneath them. In a pitched roof they very commonly do a second and more important job: they connect the feet of opposing rafters and stop the roof spreading.

That second duty is invisible from below and is the reason removing a ceiling in a roof space is not a decorative operation. The member holding the plasterboard may also be the tie holding the roof together.

  • It is not a floor joist. A ceiling joist carries a ceiling and, commonly, a tension force from the roof; a floor joist carries floor loading, which is far greater.
  • It is not a collar tie. A collar ties rafters part-way up their length; a ceiling joist ties them at the feet, where the tie is most effective.
  • It is not a ceiling hanger. A hanger suspends a ceiling from the structure above; a ceiling joist is the structure.

  • That ceiling joists only carry a ceiling. In most pitched roofs they also tie the roof.
  • That a loft floored for storage is a floor. Ceiling joists are commonly not sized for floor loading, and boarding them does not change that.
