Overview

What a independent frame is

An independent ceiling frame does not touch the floor structure above it at all. It spans between the walls of the room on its own supports, so there is no rigid path between the floor above and the ceiling below.

It is the most effective response to sound coming through a floor, because it removes the connection rather than softening it. What it costs is height: the frame has to span the room independently, and it needs depth to do so.

  • It is not a suspended ceiling. A suspended ceiling hangs from the floor above and is therefore connected to it; an independent frame is not.
  • It is not a resilient ceiling. A resiliently mounted ceiling still has connections, softened by the resilient component; an independent frame has none.
  • It is not a ceiling joist. The ceiling joist is part of the floor structure above; an independent frame is separate from it.
