Overview

What a overflow is

An overflow is a second route out, set above the normal water level, that operates only when the primary drainage fails or is exceeded. On a flat roof it is an opening through a parapet or upstand; in a stored-water context it is a pipe above the working level.

It has two purposes at once. It limits how much water can accumulate, which matters because accumulated water is a structural load. And because it discharges somewhere visible, it announces that the primary drainage is not working.

  • It is not a rainwater outlet. The outlet is the primary route and operates continuously; the overflow operates only when the primary route cannot cope.
