Protection Layer

Explains a layer whose whole value is in what it prevents, which is why its omission is invisible until much later.

Overview

What a protection layer is

A protection layer covers something vulnerable — most often a waterproofing membrane — so that what happens next does not damage it. Backfill, ballast, paving, traffic and further construction all act on the layer rather than on the thing beneath.

It contributes nothing to the performance of the element it protects. Its value is entirely in preventing damage, which means its absence is not detectable until the protected element fails, commonly years later and somewhere buried.

The distinctions that keep this entry from being a restatement of its neighbours.

  • It is not waterproofing. It protects waterproofing and is not itself a barrier.
  • It is not a separation layer, although the two are commonly used together and sometimes combined. Separation prevents contact between materials; protection prevents mechanical damage.
  • It is not insulation, though in inverted roofs the insulation above the membrane also protects it.

  • That protection is optional where the covering material seems benign. Backfill contains sharp material and is placed with machinery.
