Separation Layer

Overview
What a separation layer is
A separation layer sits between two materials that should not be in direct contact. The reason varies: some materials react chemically, some would bond when they need to slide, and some would damage each other mechanically.
The function is positive rather than passive. A slip layer under a screed exists so the screed can shrink without being restrained by what is below; a layer between dissimilar metals exists so they do not corrode each other.

- It is not a filter layer. A filter is permeable by design and manages what passes through; a separation layer keeps two things apart.

A slip layer lets a screed or slab shrink and move without being restrained by what is beneath, which is what stops restraint cracking.
Some material pairs — certain metals, cement products against some substrates — degrade each other on contact, and separation is what prevents it.

Separation layers are laid early and built over immediately, so damage during subsequent work is a common way they are lost.
