Ventilated Drained Cavity

Explains why a cavity behind cladding must do two things at once, and what happens when it only does one.

Overview

What a drained cavity is

Behind a cladding or covering that is not sealed, a space is provided that does two distinct things. It drains: water passing the outer face runs down it and out at the bottom. And it ventilates: air moves through it so anything that gets wet can dry.

The two functions are separate and both are needed. A cavity that drains but does not ventilate leaves the backing damp; one that ventilates but does not drain lets water accumulate at the bottom.

  • It is not a wall cavity between masonry leaves. That cavity drains and is commonly not deliberately ventilated; this one is narrower, behind a supported cladding, and ventilation is part of its purpose.

A continuous ventilated cavity is a path through a facade, so compartmentation of the cavity and its ventilation function are in direct tension and must be reconciled by design.

Thermal

Air moving in the cavity is outside air, so the insulation must be inboard of it and must be protected from that air movement.

Buildability

Horizontal rails, insulation and construction debris all obstruct the cavity, and it is concealed as soon as the cladding goes on.
