What a balustrade post is

A balustrade post is the vertical member that carries a guarding: the handrail, the infill and whatever is applied to them. Horizontal load applied to the top of a guarding acts on the post as a lever, and everything the post is asked to resist ends up concentrated at its base.

That means the post's own strength is rarely the limiting factor. What governs is the fixing at its base and what that fixing is made into, which is why guarding failures are almost always failures of connection.
