1.What a deck would change about using the garden
Decks are often chosen for their look and then asked to solve a level problem. Separating those two reasons early makes the rest of the conversation easier.
Write down whether the deck is wanted because the ground is awkward and uneven, or because you prefer the look and feel of timber underfoot.
A deck solving a level problem raises entirely different questions from one chosen for its character, and professionals will want to know which it is.
Note whether people would use the deck barefoot, sit on the boards or let children play directly on them, since that raises the bar for the surface.
Bare skin on boards makes splinters, heat, fixing heads and board gaps matter far more than they do on a surface only ever walked on in shoes.
Consider what would be lost if the same area were paved instead, and write the answer down as the test any deck proposal has to pass.
Stating the advantage in plain words keeps the discussion honest, and sometimes reveals that the level change, not the material, was the real driver.
Record which parts of the year the deck would actually be used in, and whether anyone would cross it in the dark or in frost to reach a shed or a bin.
A deck used only in settled weather asks less of a surface than one crossed daily in all conditions, and that difference belongs in the brief.
Note whether anyone sleeps or works in a room next to the proposed deck, since footsteps and furniture on hollow boards carry more than on paving.
Sound through a deck surprises households that have only known solid ground surfaces, and it is worth flagging before a position is settled.
2.How high the deck sits above the ground
Height governs almost everything else about a deck, yet it is often decided last. Record what the ground does now and leave the rest as questions.
Note in rough terms how far the ground falls across the area a deck would cover, using a straight edge and a stick rather than any assumed figure.
Even an approximate sense of the fall tells a professional whether they are looking at a low platform or a raised structure with quite different demands.
Mark every edge where the finished deck would stand above the ground beside it, and treat what protects that edge as a question rather than a decision.
What a raised edge needs by way of guarding is decided by a qualified professional against the requirements applying locally, not by preference.
Check what lies directly underneath every part of the proposed deck area, and say plainly whether anyone occupies, parks in or stores things in that space.

Note where people would step down from the deck to the garden and how many separate ways off it you would want, without designing the steps yourself.
The number and position of exits shapes the whole layout, and a deck with only one way off tends to funnel everybody past the seating.
Consider how the deck would look from lower parts of the garden, since a raised structure is seen from underneath far more often than owners expect.
The underside and the supports become a visible part of the garden, and deciding how they are treated is much easier before anything is built.
3.The space beneath the boards and what gets into it
What happens under a deck is invisible once the boards are down, so it is worth thinking about while everything is still open.
Ask how air would move beneath the deck and what the answer depends on, then record what you are told rather than assuming a gap is enough.
Ventilation under boards affects how the structure behaves over time, and it is a design question rather than something an owner can settle by eye.
Consider what would blow or fall into the space under the deck, including leaves from nearby trees, and ask how that material would ever be cleared.
Debris packs into an unreachable void and holds damp against the structure, which is the failure owners least expect and can do least about later.
Note whether animals already shelter in the area, and raise with a professional how the underside would be treated at its edges.
Voids under decks become homes, and it is far simpler to discuss the edge detail at design stage than to deal with an occupied space afterwards.
Write down any drain, gully, cable, pipe or meter that runs through or under the proposed area, and note which of them must stay reachable.
Anything buried under a deck becomes awkward to reach, and access needs stating as a requirement while the layout can still change.

Under-deck storage sounds useful and rarely is, so naming what would actually go there decides whether access is worth designing in at all.
4.Boards, threshold and the wall behind them
The junction with the building carries the most risk and the least owner discretion. Record what is there and leave the detail to professionals.
Raise early whether the boards would bear on the building or on their own supports clear of it, and write down the reasoning you are given either way.
Any load a deck would place on a house wall is a structural question, and only a qualified professional can establish what is possible here.
Note where the finished board level would sit relative to the door threshold, and treat the relationship between decking and the wall as a question.
Board height against a doorway, and anything protecting the wall from damp, are for a qualified professional to work out on site.
Look for anything on the wall that a raised board level could end up close to or below, such as an air brick, a vent, a tap or a meter box, and photograph each one.
These items constrain the design, and they are the things most often obstructed once a raised surface arrives against a wall.
Record how the doors open and how much clear space is needed immediately outside them before furniture or planting could begin.
Folding and outward-opening doors demand a clear strip, and the deck layout has to respect it even when that spot is the most attractive one.
Note where roof water reaches the ground near the junction, and ask what that concentrated run of water would mean for boards below it.
A downpipe outfall keeps one strip of decking permanently wet, which shows up as discolouration and slipperiness long before the rest of the deck ages.
5.Board direction, gaps and the feel underfoot
The details owners are entitled to have opinions about are mostly here, and they are the ones that decide how the deck feels every day.
Decide which way you would prefer the boards to run and note what that does to the apparent shape of the area and to the direction of any joints.
Board direction changes how a space reads and where cut ends land, and it is far easier to state as a preference than to change once framing is set.
Consider what would fall between the boards, from crumbs and cherry stones to earrings and dog claws, and raise the gap between boards as a question.
Gap width is a technical decision, but the consequences are entirely domestic, so the concerns belong in the conversation even if the figure does not.
Note whether thin chair legs, a table foot or a parasol base would sit across the board gaps, and whether anything would rock as a result.
Furniture that stands badly on decking is a common complaint, and it usually traces back to a gap or a groove nobody pictured in use.
Ask what the supplier says about grooved and smooth board faces in your conditions, and record the answer instead of choosing on appearance.
Grip underfoot is not something to judge from a showroom sample; the manufacturer states it and a qualified professional applies it to this position.
Note whether visible fixing heads would bother you, and ask what alternatives exist and what each means for lifting a board later.
Concealed fixings look calmer and can make later access harder, which is a trade worth making deliberately rather than discovering during a repair.
6.Decking in rain, frost and deep shade
Decking changes character in poor conditions more than most surfaces, and the parts that rarely dry out are usually where trouble starts.
Record how many hours of sun the deck area receives and which parts sit in permanent shade under a tree, a fence or the house.
Boards that stay damp for long stretches often develop a film that can become slippery, and the affected patch is usually predictable from the shade beforehand.
Note what falls onto the area through the season, including leaves, needles, blossom, berries and sap, and where wind tends to pile it up.
Organic material left on boards stains and feeds growth, so knowing where it collects influences both material choice and where seating sits.
Consider whether anyone would cross the deck in frost to reach a gate, bin or shed, and raise that route as a specific point with a professional.
Whether a surface is suitable on a route used in icy conditions is for a qualified professional to advise on for your particular setting.
Ask where water leaving the boards would go and what happens to the ground it lands on, without deciding any of that yourself.
Falls, drainage and what happens to water beneath a deck are design matters for a qualified professional to resolve.
Note whether any existing deck or hard surface on the plot holds standing water after rain, and photograph it before it is taken up.
An existing surface that ponds is evidence about the ground and the falls, and that evidence disappears the moment the old deck is removed.
7.How the decking material ages in your conditions
Every board changes. The question is which changes you would happily live with and which would quietly annoy you every summer.
Decide whether you want boards to weather to a grey tone or to be kept near their original colour, and note what the second answer commits somebody to.
Holding a timber colour is an ongoing task rather than a single treatment, and it is fairer to face that before the material is chosen.
Ask what movement, cupping or splitting is normal for each option in your conditions, and record what the supplier says rather than what you hope.
Some movement is expected in most boards, and knowing what is normal in advance prevents an ordinary result being treated as a failure.
Consider how each board option behaves in strong sun, especially where the deck is unshaded and people use it barefoot.
Some boards become uncomfortable underfoot in the strongest sun, which can put an unshaded deck out of use exactly when it was wanted.
Note anything unusual about your exposure, such as coastal air, heavy shade, standing damp or a spot that never sees moving air.
Take the question of whether a board copes with your particular exposure to the manufacturer, and have a qualified professional confirm it for this plot.
Ask how the deck edges, ends and any step nosings would be finished, since these are the parts that wear first and are seen most.
Edge details are where a deck looks either resolved or improvised, and they are also where water and wear concentrate over the years.
8.Cleaning, repairs and lifting boards later
A deck is a surface that will need attention, so plan for the day somebody has to get underneath it or replace part of it.
Ask what may and may not be used to clean each board option, and note that some cleaning methods damage finishes even where they look effective.
Any deck that feels soft, springy or unstable underfoot should be looked at by a qualified professional before it is cleaned, treated or used further.
Consider how debris packed into board gaps would be cleared and who in the household would take that on when the boards are wet.
Gaps blocked with grit and leaves stop draining, and clearing them is the routine job most often forgotten when a deck is being chosen.
Ask what would be involved in replacing a single damaged board, and whether the same product is likely to be obtainable later.
One split or stained board is the usual reason a deck starts to look tired, and replacement is far simpler where it was considered at the outset.
Write down whether anything under the deck would ever need reaching, and ask how access would be provided without taking the whole surface up.
Access panels are simple to design in and awkward to add afterwards, which is why buried covers become such a persistent problem.
Note whether spare boards are worth keeping, and where they could be stored flat and dry so they stay usable if one is ever needed.
Spares stored badly warp and become useless, so the storage question matters as much as the decision to keep them at all.

- Supplier information for each board option, including cleaning and treatment guidance
- Photographs of any existing deck showing wear, movement or slippery patches
