Overview
What a thermal break is
Wherever a metal component crosses an insulation layer — a facade bracket, a balcony connection, a curtain wall section — it provides a path for heat that the insulation around it does not interrupt. A thermal break is an insulating piece placed within that path.
What makes it a designed component rather than a piece of packing is that it has to carry the load while insulating. It sits in a structural load path, and it must not compress, creep or fail under sustained load.
