1.Where the heated envelope would move to
Converting a space moves the line between warm inside and cold outside. These prompts get the new line drawn before anything else is discussed.
Walk the property and describe in plain words where the heated part currently stops and the cold part begins.
Owners rarely think of their home as having a boundary of this kind, yet it is the first thing any insulation conversation needs.
List every surface that would change from separating warm from cold to sitting entirely inside the warm part, or the other way round.
These changing surfaces are where nearly all conversion insulation problems begin, and owners can identify them without help.
Note any wall that currently separates the space from the house, and ask what happens to it once both sides are warm.
A wall built as an internal partition may sit where an outside wall would have been, and that matters to a professional.
Write down what you can see or feel about the existing floor, including whether it is concrete, boarded, or laid straight onto the ground.
The floor is the surface most often left out of a conversion insulation conversation and the hardest to revisit later.
Note what sits directly above the space, whether it is open roof, a floor with rooms over it, or a shallow void you cannot see into.
What is above determines where the insulation line has to go, and owners can usually describe it accurately from a hatch or from outside.
Ask a qualified professional to state clearly where they propose the insulated line runs, and record it in a way you can point at.
This single answer explains most of the later decisions, and it is worth having in writing rather than in memory.

2.Depth in a space with no room to lose
Conversions rarely have spare height or width. These prompts establish what you can give up before anyone proposes a build-up.
Record the head height and the internal width of the space as you find them today, and note where you took each reading.
These readings are the baseline every insulation option is judged against, and they need to exist before options are discussed.
Decide roughly how much height and floor area you would be willing to give up to make the space comfortable, and write it down.
Insulation takes up space in almost every arrangement, and stating your limit turns an open discussion into a specific set of options.
Ask whether the walls would be insulated on the inside face, the outside face, or neither, and what each would mean here.
Each approach changes the appearance, the internal size and the junction detailing, and the choice is not obvious.
Which approach suits your walls, and what it means for moisture, must be established by a qualified professional at the property.
Note the height of every existing door threshold and opening, and ask what a floor build-up would do to each of them.
Raising a floor changes every threshold in the space, and this is discovered late in a great many conversions.
Note where existing windows and openings sit relative to the inside wall face, and ask what insulation would do to those reveals.
Thickened walls swallow reveals and can leave openings looking recessed and dark, which surprises people.
Record the lowest point in the space, whether that is a beam, a duct or a pipe, and treat it as the height that really matters.
An average height means nothing if a single beam crosses the room where people would walk.
3.Where converted space meets unconverted space
Most conversions leave part of the structure cold. The boundary between the two is where problems concentrate, and it needs naming early.
Write down which parts of the building would remain unheated after the conversion, including any storage, void or remaining garage area.
The remaining cold parts are the other half of the insulation question and owners often forget to mention them.
Note where a partition would separate warm from cold, and ask what that partition has to do besides divide the space.
A dividing wall in a conversion is doing a job an internal wall never had to do, which changes how it is built.
What a wall between heated and unheated space must achieve is for a qualified professional to determine for your situation.
Consider whether the floor slab or structure continues uninterrupted into the part that stays cold, and raise that as a question.
A floor running straight through can carry cold past a partition, and it is one of the least visible weak points in a conversion.
Ask whether any roof or ceiling void continues over the partition, and what that means for the insulated line.
Air moving freely above a dividing wall can undo much of what the wall was built to achieve, which is why it is worth asking about.
Note any door or hatch that would connect the warm part to the cold part, and write down how often it would be used.
A door into a cold store is used constantly in some households and never in others, which affects how it is treated.
Decide whether keeping part of the space cold for storage is genuinely worth the complication of the junction it creates.
Owners often keep a strip of garage for bicycles and then discover the divided arrangement made everything harder.
4.Thin construction, infills and weak points
Spaces built for storage or parking often contain construction that was never intended to enclose a room. These prompts locate those places.
Note whether any wall appears to be a single thickness of blockwork or brick, and photograph it from both sides where you can.
This is common in garages and outbuildings and it changes the conversation entirely, so it should be flagged first.
Note where a garage door, workshop door or other large opening would be filled in, and ask how that infill would be constructed.
The infill is new work meeting old work along three edges, and each of those edges is a junction to ask about.
How a large opening is filled in, and what it needs to achieve, must be specified by a suitably qualified professional.
Note anything spanning above the existing openings that would end up inside the insulated line, and raise it as a question.
Elements crossing the wall at an opening are a classic weak point and owners can at least point them out.
Look at the underside of the roof if you can and describe what you see, including whether daylight is visible through it anywhere.
Daylight visible from inside is a simple observation that tells a professional a great deal before they arrive.
Note any metal frame, thin panel or corrugated sheet forming part of the enclosure, and ask how such elements behave once a space is heated.
Thin and metallic elements can be prone to condensation once a space is warmed, so their presence is worth flagging early.
On a windy day, walk the space and note where you can feel air moving, listing each location rather than describing it generally.
An owner walking the space in bad weather produces better information than any amount of guessing from a drawing.
5.Moisture in a space that has always been cold
A cold, ventilated space and a warm, occupied one behave very differently. These prompts get that change raised as a question rather than discovered later.
Photograph every stain, bloom, powdery salt mark or peeling finish in the space, and note where each one sits and how high it goes.
A dated photographic record of the space before conversion is one of the most useful things an owner can produce.
Write down whether the space is ever wet, and if so whether that follows rain, cold weather, or use of something inside it.
The pattern of when moisture appears often tells a professional more than the appearance of the mark itself.
Note where the ground outside sits relative to the internal floor, and whether it is higher on any side.
Ground levels around a garage or outbuilding are frequently different from a house and this affects the whole approach.
List the existing vents, gaps and openings that currently ventilate the space, and ask what happens if the conversion closes them.
Cold spaces are usually kept dry by air movement, and removing that without replacing it is a common conversion mistake.
How a converted space should be ventilated must be established by a qualified professional against the relevant local requirements.
Write down what the room would be used for, and flag it if the use involves cooking, washing, drying or a shower.
The amount of moisture generated inside changes everything about how the space needs to be treated.
Ask whether the existing construction needs to be able to dry out, and what that means for the materials that could be used.
Older and solid constructions can behave badly when sealed, and this is a question rather than something to assume either way.

6.What the insulation line collides with
Insulating an existing space runs into everything already attached to it. These prompts list the collisions before someone has to solve them on site.
Note the position of any consumer unit, meter or isolation point on the walls of the space, and ask what would happen to each.
These items cannot simply be covered over and their position sometimes constrains where insulation can go.
Anything relating to meters, supplies or isolation must be dealt with by a suitably qualified professional and the relevant provider.
List any pipework running through the space and ask whether each run would end up inside or outside the insulated line.
A pipe left on the cold side of new insulation is a predictable problem that is easy to raise in advance.
Note the cables, brackets, shelving and fixings attached to the walls, and decide which of them you actually want back.
Everything fixed to a wall has to come off before insulation and someone has to decide what returns.
Note any drain, gully or channel in the floor of the space, and ask what would have to happen to it.
Garages and outbuildings often have drainage in the floor that a conversion has to resolve rather than cover.
Note any column, buttress or projecting pier inside the space, and ask how the insulated line would pass around it.
These are exactly the places where insulation gets interrupted, and identifying them early gives the design a chance.
Note any wall shared with a neighbouring property and raise it separately, since work to it involves more than your own decisions.
Shared walls follow their own process alongside the building work and need to be raised at the outset.
A wall shared with another property brings arrangements beyond your own decisions; ask a suitably qualified adviser what applies before planning anything to it.
7.Evidence to gather before the conversation
Insulation advice is only as good as the description of what is already there. These prompts assemble that description in a usable form.
Photograph every wall, the floor, the ceiling and each junction in the space, so the whole enclosure exists as a record.
A complete photographic set lets a professional see what you have described and ask better questions before visiting.
Write down anything you know about when the space was built or altered, and whether it was ever part of a previous project.
Age and history point a professional towards the questions worth asking about construction and moisture.
Note in plain terms how the space behaves in cold weather, including whether things stored there ever go damp or freeze.
Observed behaviour over time is information no site visit can produce, and only the owner has it.
Gather any paperwork about the property that mentions insulation, damp treatment or previous work to this space.
Earlier work often explains what is found later, and the paperwork usually exists somewhere in the house.
Write a short list of the things you genuinely do not know about the construction, and hand it over as a list of unknowns.
Being clear about what you cannot answer is more useful than guessing and is treated as such by professionals.
Sort your insulation questions into those for a designer, those for a specialist and those to confirm with the local authority.
Sorting them first stops the same question being asked of the wrong person and answered vaguely.
What thermal and ventilation requirements apply to a conversion can only be confirmed locally with the responsible body.
