Overview

What a door frame is

A door frame is fixed into an opening and carries the door: its weight through the hinges, the forces of it being used, and whatever the door is required to resist when closed.

Unlike a window frame, it is subject to repeated dynamic loading. A door being opened and closed thousands of times acts on the frame at the hinge side, and any looseness there shows quickly.

  • That a fire door is a door. It is a doorset: leaf, frame, seals and hardware together, and the certification applies to the assembly.
  • That door problems are hinge problems. Frames working loose in the opening are at least as common a cause.
