What fire sealant is
Intumescent fire sealant is generally an acrylic-based mastic loaded with components formulated so that heat makes the material expand and form a char. It is supplied in cartridges and applied with an ordinary sealant gun, and once tooled it can look almost indistinguishable from a decorator's acrylic line, which is a large part of why the two get confused on site.
That resemblance is exactly where the difficulty starts. Acrylic frame sealant is a decorating material for closing small static gaps around frames and skirtings. This product is a component of a fire-stopping detail: a particular combination of joint or penetration, substrate, backing material, whatever services pass through, the shape of the seal and the product itself, assessed together as one arrangement. The material squeezed out of the cartridge means nothing separated from that arrangement.
For that reason this entry states nothing at all about how the product or any detail made with it behaves. What matters instead is which tested detail is being followed, what test evidence supports it, whether the installation matches that evidence in every respect including substrate and backing, who is competent to carry the work out, and how each seal is recorded, photographed and inspected.
