Glazing Bead

Explains the bead as the demountable side of a glazing detail, distinct from the recess it closes and from the seal that keeps weather out.

Overview

What a bead is

A glazing unit is dropped into a recess in a frame or a facade section and then held there. The bead is what holds it: a shaped length fitted along each edge after the unit is in place, closing the open side of the recess so the glass cannot come back out of it.

What makes it a distinct element rather than a trim is that it is meant to be taken off again. The bead is the reason a failed unit can be replaced without dismantling the frame, and which face it is fitted to therefore determines whether that replacement happens from inside the building or from outside it — a decision about access and about security, taken long before anything needs replacing.

  • It is not the glazing pocket. The pocket is the recess the unit sits in and is formed within the frame section itself; the bead is the separate piece that closes one side of that recess, and the same pocket may be beaded from the inside face or the outside face without the pocket changing.
  • It is not a frame packer. A packer sits inside the recess and carries the unit's weight at chosen points, which is why its position is specified; a bead runs along the edge and retains the unit against wind and handling rather than seating it.
  • It is not the seal. Gaskets and sealants at the glazing line are published material entries and are what resist air and water there; the bead is the mechanical restraint, and it commonly carries or compresses the gasket without being it.

Commonly misunderstood

  • That the bead is what keeps the weather out. It holds the glass; the gaskets and sealants within the pocket are what deal with air and water, and a sound-looking bead says nothing about them.
  • That a bead can be swapped for any similar profile. A bead is matched to the section it clips or beds into and to the seal it carries, and a profile that fits the gap does not necessarily retain the unit or seat the gasket.
