Overview

What pvc-u window profile is

A PVC-U window profile is an unfoamed extrusion of rigid polyvinyl chloride, drawn as a long section with a dense continuous skin and a set of internal webs dividing it into chambers. It is bought by the section and by the system rather than by the metre of frame: outer frame, sash, transom, mullion, bead and trim are separate profiles designed to fit one another, and a system is the family of them that works together.

The chambers are not hollow for the sake of saving material. They divide the section so that the path from outside to inside is interrupted; they give the profile its stiffness through the webs rather than through solid bulk; and one chamber is normally left as a drainage and pressure-equalisation route, with slots that let water that has reached the rebate out again and let air in so that pressure does not drive water further. Slots that are sealed up during fitting or decorating close that route, and the frame then holds the water it was designed to shed.

Most sections are also reinforced, and the reinforcement is invisible once the window is made. A steel or composite insert is slid down the main chamber and fixed there, and it is what actually governs how the frame behaves under load, over a long span and in the sun. Whether a particular profile is reinforced, where, and with what, is a system question that cannot be answered by looking at the finished frame — which is why it is a question worth asking before the frame is made rather than afterwards.

Corners are welded, not jointed. The profile ends are heated until the material flows, pressed together and allowed to cool as one body, and the bead of displaced material is then cleaned off. That is a manufacturing process carried out in a workshop, and it is the reason a PVC-U frame cannot be taken apart and remade on site the way a mechanically jointed frame can. Colour is either through the compound or, more often, a laminated foil or coating applied to the visible faces; dark colours absorb more heat, which is a subject in its own right for a material that moves appreciably with temperature.

Thermal behaviour
The material moves appreciably as it warms and cools, and a dark foil on a sunlit elevation warms more than a white section. Allowance for that movement is part of how a frame is made and fitted rather than something dealt with afterwards.
Moisture behaviour
Water is expected to get into the rebate and is expected to leave again through the drainage slots, with pressure equalisation making that possible. A frame whose slots are blocked is not a frame that keeps water out better.
Installation dependency
Frames are welded in a workshop to measured sizes, so the survey is part of the product. On site the questions are the fixings, the packing, the squareness of the frame and the seal between the frame and the opening.
Repairability
A welded corner cannot be remade on site, so damage to a section usually means replacing a frame or a sash rather than repairing a joint. Gaskets, beads, hardware and glazing units are the parts that are genuinely replaceable.
Weathering and exposure
The visible surface is either the compound itself or a laminated foil, and the two weather differently. Chalking, colour change and foil edge lifting are the things that show with age, and how a particular product behaves belongs to its documentation.
Appearance
Sightlines — the width of frame and sash seen around the glass — are a property of the profile family and vary considerably between systems. Foil colours and woodgrain effects are a surface, and they read differently in raking light.
Surface wear
Scratches and scuffs in a foil go through to a different colour beneath, whereas a through-coloured white section marks less visibly. Cleaning practice therefore matters more on coloured frames.
