Soffit
Explains the soffit as a closure that in many roofs is also the ventilation inlet, which is why blocking it matters.

Overview
What a soffit is
The soffit closes the underside of a roof overhang, running horizontally from the back of the fascia to the wall. Without it the overhang is open underneath and the roof structure is exposed to weather, birds and wind.
In roofs that ventilate at the eaves, the soffit is also where air enters. Continuous vents or perforated boards in the soffit are the inlet, and the ventilation path depends on both the opening and what is behind it being clear.

- That soffit vents are decorative perforations. In a ventilated roof they are the inlet the whole ventilation strategy depends on.
- That a closed soffit is better than a vented one. Which is appropriate depends entirely on how the roof build-up is designed to manage moisture.
