Tile Batten

Overview

What a tile batten is

Tile battens run horizontally across the rafters at regular intervals, and the covering units hang on or fix to them. They are what turns a sloping structure into something a tile or slate can be attached to.

They are small members carrying a substantial and permanently applied load, spanning between rafters and taking foot traffic during installation and maintenance. That combination is why batten quality and fixing are specified rather than assumed.

  • It is not a purlin. A purlin supports rafters; a batten is carried by them and supports the covering.
  • It is not a counter-batten. A counter-batten runs up the slope beneath the tile battens to create a drainage and ventilation path; a tile batten runs across.
  • It is not sheathing. Sheathing closes the plane continuously; battens are spaced members with gaps between.

Battens carry installers as well as tiles, and their span and fixing account for that.
