Handrail

Overview

What a handrail is

A handrail is the continuous member alongside a stair, ramp, landing or edge that a hand can grasp and run along. Its defining property is graspability and continuity: it is useful because a hand can find it, close around it and keep contact while moving.

It is commonly carried by posts, by brackets fixed back to a wall, or by the top of a guarding — but none of those is the handrail. The handrail is the part in contact with the hand, and everything else exists to hold it in the right place and to resist what is applied to it.   • It is not a balustrade post. The post is the vertical member that carries the guarding and into whose base fixing the load is concentrated; the handrail is the horizontal or raking member held by the hand.   • It is not a balustrade infill. The infill is the zone between post, rail and base that closes the gap; the handrail is the graspable member at the top, and a guarding can have one without the other.
  • It is not a wall protection rail. Wall protection rails and corner guards are procured products, published as a material entry, whose purpose is to keep trolleys and traffic off a wall surface; a handrail exists to be grasped, which is a different job at a different position even where both are horizontal members on a wall.

Commonly misunderstood

  • That the handrail and the balustrade are the same thing. The balustrade is the assembly; the handrail is the graspable member within it, and a handrail can exist on a wall with no balustrade at all.
  • That a handrail's strength is a property of the rail. What governs is almost always the fixing and what it is made into, not the section of the rail itself.
