Mezzanine Floor System

Overview

What mezzanine structure is

A mezzanine is a platform put into a volume that already exists. It occupies part of the height of a taller space, most often in a building with a generous clear internal volume, and it is filed here with the frames rather than with the floors because its columns and beams are the thing being described. The deck is what people notice, but the deck is the last part of the arrangement to be decided.

Two families cover most cases. In the first, the platform stands on its own columns taken down to their own bases, touching the surrounding building only where it has to; in the second, beams are connected into the existing structure, which then becomes part of the platform's support. Which family is being built governs almost everything downstream, from what the ground beneath has to carry to what happens when the host building moves.

and the distinction is visible rather than historical. A mezzanine occupies part of the height of a taller volume, stands on its own columns landing on a floor slab rather than on purpose-made foundations, and touches the surrounding building only where it has to - either holding a maintained gap or tying in at declared points. A frame, by contrast, carries the building down to foundations sized for it. That the platform usually arrives after the volume it sits in is a consequence of the arrangement rather than the test for it, and it is not a reliable one: a mezzanine designed into a new warehouse is still a mezzanine.

Purpose

What this system is intended to do

The job the assembly exists to perform, conceptually. An intention is not a guarantee that any particular build achieves it.

  • Add usable area within a volume that already exists, without extending the building's footprint.
  • Carry that area either on a structure of its own or through connections made into the building already there, which are two different arrangements.
  • Keep the space beneath usable by concentrating support into columns rather than walls.
  • Make the new load path explicit, so that what the existing structure is being asked to do can be stated.

Order is not meaningful in this system. These roles interact as parts of one whole rather than stacking up in a sequence, so the list below is not a build-up and nothing should be read into the order it appears in.

  • Primary supportColumns and base plates

    Uprights taking everything above them down to a small footprint. Because they usually land on a floor rather than on purpose-made foundations, what lies under each base becomes part of the platform's structure whether or not anyone has drawn it.

  • Primary supportPrimary beams

    Members running between columns and collecting the load brought to them by the members above. Their depth sets how far apart the columns can be, and it takes that depth out of the clear height both above and below the platform.

  • Primary supportSecondary beams or joists

    The closer-set members carrying the deck to the primary beams. They also hold the deck flat, so a change in what the deck is made of is rarely a change to the deck alone.

  • SubstrateStructural decking

    The plane spanning between the secondary members, which may be board, grating or a topped metal deck. Beyond carrying what is on it, the deck ties the members beneath together and contributes to how the platform behaves as a whole.

  • AttachmentConnection to or separation from the host

    The junction where the platform either engages the existing building or is deliberately held clear of it. This is the single decision the rest of the arrangement follows from, and it is often blurred later by a finish closing the gap.

  • Edge and terminationEdge, stair and access openings

    The perimeter of the deck and the holes cut through it for stairs, lifts or loading. Each opening removes deck and interrupts members, so the edge condition is framed as part of the structure rather than added to it.

  • Service zoneZone beneath the deck

    The space between the underside of the deck and whatever is below, where lighting, ducts and other services are usually run. Everything placed there hangs from the platform and takes from the clear height it was inserted to create.

  • ProtectionColumn protection

    Guards or barriers around columns where vehicles, trolleys or handling equipment pass. A column that has been struck is a structural matter rather than a cosmetic one, and where impact is foreseeable the protection is part of the design.

Interaction

How the parts work together

The reason this is a system rather than a list of parts: what depends on what, and what stops working when one part is changed.

Everything on the platform gathers into a small number of points on the floor below. The deck brings load to the secondary members, they bring it to the primary beams, and the beams bring it to columns that concentrate it where a slab was probably never asked for anything of the kind. The existing slab, the ground under it and any foundation nearby therefore become part of the new structure, and the platform cannot be assessed without them.

Connecting to the host building or keeping clear of it are two different structures, not two ways of building one. A platform tied into the surrounding frame shares its stability arrangement and also inherits its movement; a freestanding platform must resist horizontal action by itself, usually through braced bays or stiffened connections, and needs the gap around it to stay a gap. Closing that gap with a lining or a screed makes the connection nobody chose to make.

The deck and the members beneath it work as a pair. The deck spreads what is on it and holds the members straight, so changing to a different deck, or leaving an area open for a stair, changes the members as well as the surface. An opening in particular has to be framed: the load that would have crossed it travels around, and the members doing that carrying are usually heavier than the ones they replace.

Height is the currency the whole arrangement spends. A deeper beam reaches further between columns but takes that depth out of the clear height above and below, and every service hung under the deck spends a little more. The arrangement of columns, the depth of the structure, the services beneath and the usable height above are one decision made together, not four made in sequence.

Material families commonly met in each role

Commonly encountered, not recommended. Whether a material suits a given project depends on the whole assembly, the exposure, the manufacturer's documentation and qualified professional review.

Primary support

These families are commonly encountered as columns and beams in inserted platforms. What any member has to be follows from the load path being introduced and from what lies beneath the columns, and that is settled by an engineer.

Substrate

Decking families are commonly encountered on platforms of this kind. Because the deck also ties the members below it together, a change from one family to another is a structural question rather than a change of surface.

Attachment

These are commonly encountered in the brackets, cleats and anchors at connections. Where a fixing is made into an existing structure, what that structure will accept is established by investigation rather than assumed from the material.

Protection

Coating and guarding families are commonly encountered around inserted steelwork. No performance is stated here; what any treatment achieves depends on the arrangement it is applied to and on the manufacturer's documentation.

Edge and termination

Edge and nosing profiles are commonly encountered where the deck stops or meets a stair. They close a structural edge that has already been framed, and they neither form that edge nor make it safe by themselves.

Junctions

Where this system meets others

Interfaces are where most assemblies actually fail, so they are set out explicitly rather than left inside the prose. What resolves a junction is a detail designed for the specific building — not a rule of thumb.

  • Existing slab beneath the columns

    Column bases usually land on a slab laid for something else entirely. Whether that slab can take a concentrated point, and what lies beneath it, is investigated rather than assumed, and the answer often decides where the columns can go.

    Where the existing slab cannot take the load, individual foundations are formed beneath the column positions. Cutting into a floor to build them reaches whatever lies under it, which may include services, a barrier layer or ground of unknown condition.

    Guarding posts land on the same edge members that frame the deck, so horizontal action on a barrier arrives at the platform structure through them.     A platform either braces itself or leans on the building around it. Leaning on the building means adding to an arrangement that was settled without it, and bracing itself means keeping a genuine separation that later work must not close.

    Buildings with a clear internal volume are the usual host, and their frames are arranged for the envelope and their own stability. A platform fixed to a column changes what that column carries and where it is restrained.

    Rooms formed on the platform bring weight onto it that may not have been in the original brief, and partitions built beneath it may end up wedged against its underside. Neither should be allowed to become a support that was never designed.

Buildability
The work happens inside a building that already exists and is often still in use. Access for members, the room needed to lift them and the sequence in which the space can be released all shape the arrangement well before any preference about materials does.
Acoustic
A platform introduces activity directly above a space that previously had nothing above it, and impact carried through a light deck into the structure beneath is the usual complaint. Acoustic behaviour is a property of the complete arrangement and belongs with a qualified professional.
Fire
An inserted floor changes how a space is divided and how people leave it, and both are matters for the relevant authority and a fire professional. No performance, rating or acceptability is stated in this entry.
Interfaces
The demanding points are the column bases, the connection to or separation from the host, the edges and the openings. The middle of the deck, which is what everyone looks at, is where the least design attention is needed.
Documentation
The platform's own drawings are only half the record; what matters equally is what is known about the building receiving it. Where the existing structure and its foundations are undocumented, investigation becomes part of the design rather than a preliminary to it.
Durability
Inserted steelwork is often in an environment it was not selected for, whether damp, salted or subject to impact from handling equipment. The base of a column standing in a washed floor is the part most exposed and the part least looked at.

  • A mezzanine is treated as a floor, when the columns and beams beneath it are the structure being introduced.
  • The existing slab is assumed able to take column bases because it carries everything else standing on it.
  • A deliberate gap between platform and building is closed by a later finish, quietly creating a connection nobody designed.
  • Removing a platform is imagined as simple, although its columns and any fixings into the host leave the building altered.
