Bracing Member
Explains bracing as resistance to lateral movement, a duty entirely distinct from carrying weight.

Overview
What a bracing is
A rectangular frame with pinned corners can deform into a parallelogram without any member changing length. Bracing prevents that: a diagonal member across the rectangle has to change length for the frame to distort, and it resists.
It is therefore a member with nothing to do with vertical load. A frame can be entirely adequate for the weight it carries and still be unstable sideways without bracing.

- It is not a strut. A strut carries vertical load from a purlin down to a support; bracing resists sideways movement of the frame as a whole.
- It is not a collar tie. A collar resists a roof spreading outward under its own geometry; bracing resists lateral loads such as wind acting on the structure.
- It is not a racking panel, although the two do the same job by different means: a panel resists racking through its sheet action, a brace through triangulation.

- That a structure strong enough vertically is stable. Vertical capacity and lateral stability are separate requirements.
- That temporary bracing during construction can simply be removed. Whether it was temporary or permanent is a design question, not an appearance one.
