Overview
What a racking panel is
A racking panel is a board fixed across the face of a framed wall so that the wall cannot distort into a parallelogram. It works by sheet action: the board resists being deformed, and the fixings transfer that resistance into the frame.
Because the fixings are what transfer the force, the fixing pattern is as much part of the panel's structural performance as the board itself. A structurally sheathed wall and a wall with the same board fixed at wider centres are not the same element.

- It is not ordinary sheathing. Sheathing board fills the position of closing the frame; a racking panel is a sheathing board doing a structural job, and the difference is in the fixing specification rather than the board.
