Column Base Plate

Overview

What a base plate is

A column delivers a large load over a small area. A base plate spreads that load over an area the foundation can accept, and it provides the means — commonly bolts cast into the foundation — by which the column is held in position.

It is also where two very different construction tolerances meet: the concrete beneath is placed to one standard of accuracy, and the steel above is fabricated to another. The bedding beneath the plate is where that difference is resolved.

  • It is not a sole plate. A sole plate runs continuously under a framed wall; a base plate serves one column at a point.
