Overview

What a wall plate is

A wall plate is a length of timber bedded along the top of a wall. Rafters or joists bear on it rather than directly on the masonry, so that their concentrated loads are spread along the wall instead of arriving at points.

It also gives those members something to fix to, which masonry does not readily provide, and it establishes a level line at wall head level that the structure above is set out from.

  • It is not a sole plate. A sole plate is at the bottom of a framed wall; a wall plate is at the top of a wall, receiving what spans onto it.
