Pile Cap

Overview
What a pile cap is
A pile cap sits over the head of a pile or a group of piles and connects them to what they support. Its job is transfer: taking a load that arrives at one point — a column, or a beam end — and distributing it into pile heads that are not in the same place.
Where a group of piles is used, the cap also ties them to act together, so that the group behaves as one support rather than as several independent ones.

- It is not a pad foundation, although the two can look similar. A pad bears on the ground beneath; a cap bears on piles and deliberately does not rely on that ground.
- It is not a pile shaft. The cap is above ground level or just below it and is accessible during construction; the shaft is the element in the ground.
- It is not a ground beam. A beam spans between caps; a cap sits over piles.

- That a cap is a foundation bearing on soil. In a piled arrangement the ground under the cap is usually not relied on at all.
