Raft Thickening

Overview
What a thickening is
A raft thickening is a part of a raft foundation made deeper than the slab around it, formed along the lines where load arrives — beneath loadbearing walls, beneath column positions, and commonly around the perimeter. It is cast as part of the raft rather than built separately.
Its job is to get concentrated load into a slab that spreads it. A wall delivers load along a line and a column delivers it at a point, while the raft distributes that over an area of ground; the thickening is the stiffer zone that makes the transition without the slab having to be deepened everywhere. It is called a linear element because it follows the loaded lines, not because it spans between anything: the ground beneath it supports it continuously along its whole length.

- It is not a ground beam. A ground beam spans between supports such as pile caps and carries load to them; a thickening is continuously supported by the ground beneath the raft and stiffens rather than spans.
- It is not a strip foundation. A strip is a separate foundation under a wall with the floor built independently of it; a thickening is part of a single element that is both foundation and floor.
- It is not a slab edge. The slab edge is the perimeter condition where the slab terminates and where thermal and moisture continuity are resolved; a thickening may occur at the perimeter but exists for load distribution, and it occurs internally as well.
