1.How the room warms now and where it stays cold
Before anything is replaced, it is worth recording how the existing arrangement behaves. Observations from the household are more useful than assumptions about what a new emitter would do.
Note which parts of the bathroom feel cold while the rest of the home is comfortable, including the floor, any outside wall and the area beside the window.
Cold spots often have more to do with the fabric of the room than with the emitter, and pointing them out early changes what a professional looks at.

3.Competing for the same piece of wall

Note the height of the window sill and whether it limits what could sit beneath it, since that wall is often the obvious place for an emitter.
The wall under a window is frequently the only free wall in a bathroom, and the sill quietly restricts what will fit there.

4.Keeping towels dry when the heating is off

What is beneath the room affects the conversation considerably, and it is something an owner can often observe from the space below.
Ask a qualified professional what a warm floor would add to the floor build-up here, and what that would do to the threshold and the door.
Floor build-up affects thresholds, door clearances and drainage falls; it must be worked out on site by a qualified professional, never assumed.
Consider whether a warm floor is wanted for comfort underfoot or as the main source of warmth, because those are two quite different conversations.
The answer changes what is asked of the system, and stating it plainly avoids a great deal of confusion later in the design.
Write down which floor finish you are drawn to, and ask whether it is suitable over a warmed floor at all in this situation.
Whether a finish suits a warmed floor depends on the product and the construction; ask the supplier and the person carrying out the work.
Note where a cabinet, a bath panel or a unit would sit on the floor, since covered areas behave differently from open ones.
Layouts drawn without this in mind often end up warming the floor underneath the furniture and leaving the standing areas cool.
Ask how a warm floor would be controlled and how promptly the room responds when somebody actually wants heat in it.
Responsiveness matters most in a bathroom, which is used in short bursts rather than occupied steadily like a living room.
6.Controls, switching and who adjusts them
A control that nobody understands is left alone permanently. This section is about who in the household actually operates anything.
Write down who in the household adjusts the heating and who never touches it, because a control nobody understands simply gets ignored.
Specifying a sophisticated control for a household that will never touch it is a familiar and avoidable disappointment.
Note whether the current valve is stiff, hidden behind a fixture, or impossible to reach without kneeling on the floor of the shower.
Valve position is decided during the fit-out and is almost never revisited afterwards, so it is worth raising while it can still change.
Consider whether you want the bathroom to be controllable separately from the rest of the home, and record that as a stated preference.

This is the exact scenario households complain about afterwards, and it is rarely tested during the design conversation.

A photograph of the existing control saves a great deal of confusion when somebody unfamiliar with the home is asked about it.
Ask a qualified professional whether the controls being proposed can be operated comfortably by everybody who uses this room.
Controls are usually chosen on appearance, and the person who finds them difficult tends to be the one who says nothing.
7.How much towel the household really produces
Rails are chosen to suit a wall and then asked to carry whatever the household generates. This section counts what actually needs to hang.
Count the towels that come out of this bathroom on a busy morning, including hand towels, bath sheets and anything a child uses.
The number is usually higher than people expect, and it converts an abstract preference into a measurable requirement for hanging space.
Note where wet towels currently end up, including a radiator elsewhere in the home, a floor, a banister or the back of the door.
Where towels migrate to is direct evidence that the bathroom does not currently offer enough usable hanging space.
Consider whether the household wants towels stored in the room as well as dried in it, since storage and drying compete for the same rail.
A rail loaded with dry stored towels has nowhere left for wet ones, which is how a new rail can feel inadequate immediately.
Write down whether bath sheets are used in this household, because they need considerably more hanging length than a hand towel does.
Larger towels folded double over a short bar stay damp in the middle, which is often mistaken for a heating fault.
Note whether swimming kit, sports clothing or hand-washed items regularly come into this room to dry alongside the towels.
These items compete for the same rail at exactly the times it is most loaded, and they are almost never mentioned in a brief.
Ask a supplier how much usable hanging length a rail actually offers once the lowest bars sit behind a fixture and cannot be reached.
Advertised size and usable size differ once the rail is on a real wall in a real room with fixtures around it.

- Photographs of the existing radiator or heated rail, including its valves and the pipes entering the wall
- Any manuals, service records or controls information you hold for the heating system in this home
- Your own sketch of the bathroom showing every wall already claimed by a fixture, a door or a cabinet
- Notes on how the room performs while the central heating is running and while it is switched off
- Anything the supplier publishes about the floor finish you are drawn to and its use over a warmed floor
- A written list of everything that needs to dry in this room, including towels and anything brought in

Blind spots
Commonly overlooked items
- The only wall that suited a towel rail is the wall the new tall cabinet was drawn onto
- A rail loaded with towels warms the room far less than the empty rail seen in the showroom
- Towels stay damp because the room never dries out, and the heating gets blamed for it
- The valve ends up behind the bath panel where nobody can reach it without dismantling something
- The floor build-up rises and the door no longer clears the new threshold underneath it
- Nobody asks what happens when the household turns the heating off and still wants dry towels
- Larger towels are bought after the rail is fitted and will not hang on it properly
