1.Where the sun actually reaches, and when
Everything in this conversation starts with orientation and observation. Recording it yourself is quick and prevents the discussion running on assumptions.
Note which elevation faces roughly towards the midday sun and which faces away, using a compass, and write the answer onto a plan or a rough sketch.
Almost every shading question begins with orientation, and a sketch that carries it removes a whole layer of misunderstanding.
Record which rooms take direct sun in the morning, which in the afternoon and which in the evening, observed over an ordinary bright spell.
Low morning and evening sun is far harder to shade than high midday sun, so knowing which one troubles you changes the options entirely.
Photograph the pattern of sunlight and shadow inside the rooms that trouble you, taken at the point in the year when it feels worst.
A photograph of a sun patch on a floor tells a designer more about geometry than a verbal description ever does.
Note how far a patch of sun travels into a room, since deep penetration in cold months is often welcome while shallow high sun in warm months usually is not.
Owners often ask to block sun altogether and then miss the warmth and light it brought in the darker part of the year.
Write down whether roof glazing, glazed doors or a glazed roof is involved, since overhead glass behaves very differently from a vertical window.
Sun strikes horizontal and near-horizontal glass much more directly, and shading it is a different problem with different answers.
Ask a qualified professional how sun angles at your location change between seasons before assuming a shading idea will behave the same all year.

2.Rooms that overheat and how it shows
Describe the discomfort precisely. Different symptoms point at different remedies, and a vague description usually produces a generic answer.
Write down which rooms become uncomfortable, in which conditions and at what point in the year, using the household's own words rather than technical terms.
The household account is genuine evidence, and it is often the only record of how the building actually performs in use.
Record whether the discomfort comes from warm air, from direct sun on skin, from glare on screens or from heat lingering into the night, since each needs a different answer.
Glare and heat are frequently confused, and a shading measure that fixes one can leave the other untouched.
Note whether a room stays warm long after the sun has left it, since that points at heat held in the structure rather than at the glazing alone.
This distinction changes whether the conversation is about shading, about ventilation, or about both together.
Record what the household already does about it, such as closing curtains, opening windows, running fans or avoiding the room altogether.
These habits are evidence of both the severity and the pattern, and they are easily forgotten once a project starts.
Note any room where the problem began or worsened after earlier work such as new glazing, added insulation or a loft conversion.
A change in behaviour after previous work is a strong clue, and it belongs in front of whoever is advising you.
Ask what measurements or monitoring, if any, would be useful before options are compared, and who would carry them out.
Any assessment of overheating in a specific room should come from a suitably qualified professional rather than from household impressions alone.
3.Shade you already have from trees and neighbours
Buildings are often shaded by things nobody has thought about. Record what is doing that work now, because it can disappear.
Note which trees, hedges and neighbouring buildings currently shade your windows, and at which point in the year and time of use they do so.
Shade you rely on without noticing is the easiest thing to lose during a project or a neighbour tidy-up.
Record whether shading trees are deciduous or evergreen, since bare branches in cold months and full leaf in warm months is a pattern people depend on unknowingly.
That seasonal switch is difficult to reproduce with any built element, so losing it matters more than owners expect.
Write down whether any shading you depend on stands on land you do not control, and is therefore outside your influence entirely.
Trees, boundaries and light to windows involve legal questions; take advice from a suitably qualified professional before assuming existing shade will remain.
Note any canopy, balcony, deep reveal or overhang that already shades an opening, and photograph the shadow it casts across the glass.
Existing shading elements are a useful reference point when discussing what a new one would need to do.
Consider whether planned work such as an extension, a raised roof or a garden building would remove shade you currently benefit from.
This is regularly discovered after completion, when a previously comfortable room becomes the difficult one.
Record whether a neighbouring development or tree removal could change your shading, and treat that as something to check locally rather than assume.
Planning a scheme around borrowed shade is a risk worth naming out loud before anything is drawn.
4.Fixed shading against adjustable shading
Fixed elements work without anybody remembering to use them. Adjustable ones give control but rely on somebody operating them.
Write down whether you would accept a permanent external element above a window, such as a projecting canopy, fin or deep overhang, on the elevation concerned.
Appearance objections to fixed shading usually surface late, so it is better to establish the household position at the start.
Consider whether adjustable external shutters or blinds are acceptable in terms of appearance, daily operation and upkeep.
External adjustable shading is often the most effective option and the one owners rule out on looks without discussing it.
Note who in the household would actually operate manual shading, and whether the opening can be reached comfortably from inside.
Shading that is awkward to reach stops being used within a season, which quietly undoes the whole measure.
Record whether motorised or automated shading interests you, and note that it brings power supply, controls and maintenance questions with it.
Automation choices need a cable route decided early, and retrofitting one through a finished wall is disruptive.
Ask how any external shading would be fixed back to the building, and what that means for the wall or roof behind it.
Fixing shading to a wall or roof raises structural, wind loading and weathertightness questions for a suitably qualified professional.
Note that shading which works well above a window facing the midday sun often performs poorly on an east or west facing one, and ask why in your case.
Horizontal shading struggles against low sun, which is precisely the condition that makes many rooms uncomfortable.
5.Glass and coatings as questions, not answers
Glass choices are made quickly and last a very long time. These are the questions worth having ready before a specification is offered.
Write down what you want from the glass in each room, whether view, daylight, privacy, winter warmth or less summer heat, accepting that these pull against each other.
Naming the conflict yourself makes the eventual compromise a decision rather than a disappointment.
Ask what a solar control coating would do to the colour of the view from inside and to the appearance of the glass seen from outside.
Coatings can add a tint or a reflective quality that is entirely acceptable if expected and jarring if not.
Note that glass reducing summer heat usually reduces useful winter warmth and daylight as well, and ask how that balance has been struck for your rooms.
This trade-off is inherent, so an option presented as having no downside deserves a follow-up question.
Record whether any opening could be reduced in area or reshaped rather than treated with a special glass to solve the same problem.
Changing the size of an opening is sometimes simpler and more durable than specifying a technical glass, and it is rarely offered.
Ask who is responsible for confirming that a proposed glass specification suits the frame, the opening and the exposure at that position.
Glass specification, safety glazing and frame compatibility are matters for the glazing supplier and a suitably qualified professional to determine.
Note whether existing glazing units show misting or failed seals, since replacement may already be under discussion for reasons unconnected with heat.
If units are being changed anyway, the shading conversation and the replacement conversation should happen together.
6.Air movement, night cooling and openable windows
Shading and ventilation solve overlapping problems. Record how the building can actually be opened before adding anything to the outside.
Record which windows genuinely open, how far they open, and whether they can be left open when nobody is at home.
Rooms with restricted or unusable openings behave very differently, and this is often the real constraint.
Note whether openings on opposite or adjacent sides of a space can be used together, since air moving through a room behaves differently from a single opening.
Cross ventilation is frequently blocked by a single closed internal door, which is a simple thing to discover early.
Write down whether noise, insects, pollen, privacy or security stop the household opening windows in practice, since that changes what shading must achieve.
If windows cannot be opened, ventilation cannot be assumed as part of the answer, and the shading discussion becomes more demanding.
Consider whether high-level openings exist or could be discussed, since warm air collects at the top of a space and needs somewhere to leave.
A small high opening can do disproportionate work, and it is easier to include while an opening is being altered anyway.
Ask how any mechanical ventilation already fitted interacts with opening windows, and who can explain how its controls are meant to be used.
How a ventilation system should be operated or altered is a question for the installer or a suitably qualified professional, not something to settle by trial.
Note whether ceiling fans or similar air movement are acceptable to the household, and where power for them would come from.
Air movement changes perceived comfort noticeably, and the fixing and wiring are far easier to plan alongside other work.
7.Glare, daily use and the trade-offs you accept
Some complaints attributed to heat are really about light and layout. Record how the rooms are used before committing to an external change.
Note where screens, televisions and work surfaces sit relative to the windows, since glare complaints often relate more to position than to the glazing itself.
Moving a desk sometimes resolves what looked like a glazing problem, and it is worth trying before anything is specified.
Record which rooms matter most for comfort, such as a room used for sleeping or for concentrated work, and which can reasonably be tolerated as they are.
Priorities let a designer concentrate effort where it counts instead of treating every window the same.
Write down which you would rather give up where the two conflict, the view or the summer comfort, since that single answer shapes most of the options.
Without an answer, the design tends to protect the view by default and the comfort problem persists.
Note that internal blinds act after light has already passed through the glass, and ask what that means in practice compared with stopping it outside.
Internal options are simpler and less visible from outside, but the difference in effect is worth hearing explained.
Record what cleaning and upkeep each shading idea would involve, whether it can be reached safely, and who would be doing it.
Reaching external shading at height for cleaning or repair is work for a suitably qualified professional with proper access equipment.
Keep a dated note of the observations you have made across the seasons, so the discussion rests on your own record rather than on memory.
A hot spell is remembered as one general impression, while dated entries preserve which rooms and which conditions actually coincided.

- Whether external shading may be fixed to your building, and whether it is acceptable at your address, must be confirmed locally.
- Household observations are useful evidence but they are not measurements; say so clearly when you hand them over.
