This is general planning preparation. These situations need a qualified professional, and often the relevant authority.

- Replacing advice from a qualified electrician, engineer or drainage designer

1.What it weighs once it is in use
Almost every siting conversation goes wrong because the object discussed is the empty one. These prompts change the subject to the filled one.
Ask the supplier for the weight of the vessel filled and occupied rather than as delivered, and write that figure down as the one that matters.
The delivered weight is what people picture and it is not the weight the ground will be asked to carry for years.
Ask how the weight reaches the ground, whether across the whole base, on a frame, or concentrated on feet or supports.
How a load arrives at the ground is part of the question, and it is something an owner can establish from the supplier easily.
Write down that this information will be needed by whoever advises on the base, and take it to them rather than waiting to be asked.
Base quotations are frequently given without anybody having seen the weight, which is the one number the answer depends on.
Note anything that would stand alongside it, such as a housing, steps, a cover lifter, a store or surrounding decking.
Ancillary items arrive with the vessel and take up both space and load that nobody included in the original plan.
Note that people stand, sit and gather around the vessel as well as in it, so the loaded area is larger than the vessel itself.
The surround takes concentrated foot traffic in wet conditions, which is a different duty from the one the vessel imposes.
2.What it would stand on
The base is where most of the professional input belongs. These prompts are about arriving at that conversation with the right information.
Record what is currently in the proposed position, including whether it is lawn, existing paving, decking, a terrace or bare ground.
Each of those leads to a different conversation, and describing it accurately saves a visit spent establishing it.
Where you are considering standing it on existing paving, note that what lies beneath that paving is unknown until somebody establishes it.
A sound-looking surface says nothing about the construction beneath it, and the construction is what carries the load.
Whether any existing surface can carry a filled vessel is a determination for a qualified professional, not something to infer from appearance.
Where a deck or raised platform is proposed, ask who is designing it for this load and whether that is the same person building it.
A deck built for people is answering a different question from one carrying a filled vessel permanently.
Ask what the base has to do about level and about water running off it, and note the answer rather than assuming it is flat.
Both requirements come from the installation rather than from preference, and they sometimes pull against each other.
Ask whether anything beneath or behind the vessel needs to be reachable afterwards, and what reaching it would involve once it is in place.
A vessel is extremely difficult to move once filled, so anything it covers is effectively buried for as long as it is there.
Establish who is taking responsibility for the base as a whole rather than for the surface on top of it.
Surface and foundation are commonly quoted by different people, and the gap between them is where these installations fail.
3.Where it sits in relation to everything else
Position raises questions that have nothing to do with the base. These are the ones most likely to be missed entirely.
Note whether the position is on, above or near anything holding a level, and treat that as a question before going any further.
A filled vessel above retained ground is an added load on a structure that nobody is thinking about at that moment.
Placing a filled vessel on or near retained ground is a question for a qualified engineer before anything is ordered.
Check whether the position would cover a drain, chamber, gully, cover or stop tap, and mark each of them on a sketch.
Anything covered by a vessel becomes unreachable, and this is one of the easiest things to notice in advance and the easiest to forget.
Establish what is buried in the proposed position before anything is dug or built, and record what you were told and by whom.
A base involves excavation, and a position chosen for the view is not chosen with any knowledge of what runs beneath it.
Note any established tree nearby, and ask about both what the roots mean for the base and what the base means for the tree.
The relationship runs in both directions, and only one of the two is usually raised by whoever is quoting.
Anything affecting an established tree belongs with a qualified arboricultural professional, and any protection must be confirmed locally.
Record how close the position is to a boundary and which neighbouring windows and gardens look onto or hear it.
Privacy and noise are the two things neighbours raise, and both are far cheaper to consider before installation than after.
Where the position is near the building, note the damp course line, any vent, airbrick or opening, and anything the vessel would sit against.
A vessel full of warm water standing against a wall raises questions about that wall that nothing in the sales conversation covers.
4.Emptying and where the water goes
This is the question most often left until the first time it needs answering, by which point the vessel is full and in position.
Ask the supplier how often the vessel is expected to be emptied and refilled, and write the answer down before choosing a position.
Emptying is a recurring event rather than a one-off, and the position has to work for it every single time.
Ask where that volume of water may be discharged, and confirm locally rather than assuming it can go onto the garden or into a drain.
Where water may be discharged is a matter for the relevant authority and the treatment in the water changes the answer.
Discharge of treated water is subject to local requirements; confirm with the relevant authority and with a qualified drainage professional.
Trace the route the discharged water would take across the garden, and note what it crosses, soaks into or runs towards.
A large volume released in one go behaves quite differently from rain, and the route matters as much as the destination.
Note whether the route or destination would take water towards retained ground, a boundary, a building or planting you value.
Introducing water deliberately near any of these is worth raising with somebody qualified rather than deciding on the day.
Ask what the practical arrangement for emptying is, including whether a pump, a hose route or an outside tap is needed.
The practicalities decide whether emptying actually happens on schedule or gets postponed because it is inconvenient.
Note where the vessel is filled from and how long that takes, and check the route works from the position you are considering.
Filling is the other half of the same recurring event and is decided by the same position.
5.Supply, connections and getting it into position
The connections are professional work, but the questions and the route in are worth thinking through before anybody quotes.
Ask the supplier exactly what supply the vessel needs, and take that to a qualified electrician before deciding on a position.
Position and supply are decided together, and choosing the position first sometimes makes the supply the expensive part.
All outdoor electrical work must be designed and carried out by a qualified electrician, with local requirements confirmed.
Ask where a supply would have to run and what it would cross, including any surface that would need to be opened.
A trench across a finished garden is often the largest single consequence of the position chosen, and it is rarely mentioned early.
Ask where any isolation point would be and whether it remains reachable once the vessel and its surround are in place.
Something that must be reachable in a hurry should not end up behind a filled vessel.
Measure the route the vessel would take into the garden, including gates, pinch points, steps and any change of level.
Delivery access is the constraint that most often forces a rethink, and it can be checked with a tape before anything is ordered.
Ask what would happen if the vessel cannot be carried in, including where a crane or machine would stand and on what.
A standing position for lifting plant is a concentrated load on a particular patch of ground, often the drive or the front garden.
Ask how the vessel would be removed at the end of its life, and whether the route in will still exist once the garden is finished.
Owners routinely build a garden around a vessel and then discover there is no way to get it out again.
6.Noise, clearance and living with it
These are the things that decide whether a well-sited vessel is actually used, and they belong in the siting decision.
Ask what noise the equipment makes, when it runs, and whether it runs at times when nobody is using the vessel.
Equipment cycles independently of use, which is why the noise question is about the whole day rather than the evening.
Check how much room the lid or cover needs to open fully, and confirm the position leaves that room at the right side.
A cover that cannot open properly is the most common practical complaint about a vessel that is otherwise well placed.
Check there is room to walk around the vessel safely when wet, and note where people would actually step getting in and out.
Wet surfaces and a narrow gap are a poor combination, and this is settled entirely by where the vessel goes.
Note the route from the house in bad weather and after dark, and whether it involves steps, a level change or an unlit stretch.
Distance from the door is one of the better predictors of whether a vessel gets used through the winter.
Outdoor lighting and any change of level on a route belong with qualified professionals and must be confirmed locally.
Note what screening would be needed for the position to be comfortable, and whether that screening itself needs a base or foundations.
Screening frequently becomes a second structure, and it is better considered as part of the same decision than added afterwards.
Write down who in the household will actually maintain the water and the equipment, and how often that has to happen.
The upkeep is regular and falls to one person, and being honest about that at the start avoids a vessel nobody looks after.
7.The months nobody uses it
A vessel spends much of the year unused, and what happens during that period is rarely part of the sales conversation.
Ask whether the vessel is intended to be left full or empty when it is not in use, and what each option involves.
The two answers have different consequences for the ground beneath it, for the equipment and for what happens in cold weather.
Note that a vessel left full imposes its load on the ground continuously, rather than only during the hours it is actually being used.
Owners tend to think of the load as occasional because the use is occasional, and those are different things.
Ask what has to be done in cold weather and who would do it, including what happens if the household is away.
This is the point at which an unused vessel becomes a liability rather than simply an unused feature.
Ask what attention the vessel needs during the months it is not used, and how often somebody has to go out to it.
Knowing the answer before installation is what stops a vessel being abandoned quietly after the first winter.
Ask what the position would be if the vessel were left unused for a long period, and what reinstating the area would involve.
A sizeable proportion of garden vessels are eventually removed, and the question of what is left behind belongs in the siting decision.

Having these to hand usually makes the first conversation shorter and more useful.
- Supplier information stating the weight of the vessel filled and occupied
- Supplier information on the supply, equipment and expected emptying frequency
- A sketch of the garden marking the proposed position and everything near it
- Any record you hold of services, drainage and covers in the garden
- Measurements of the delivery route, including gates, steps and pinch points
- Any information you hold about retained ground or level changes in the garden

Decisions to record before work begins
Write these down in your own words, with the date, so everyone is working from the same version.
- The position being considered and what is currently in it
- The weight in use, and who you have given that information to
- Who is taking responsibility for the base as a whole
- Where the water would be discharged and what you confirmed locally
- How the vessel would be delivered, and how it would be removed later
- Who in the household will maintain it and what that involves
- What happens to the vessel during the months it is not used

- What supply does this need, where would it run and where would isolation sit?
- What clearance does the cover need, and does the position allow for it?
- What would be involved in removing the vessel and reinstating the area later?

- A drain, cover or stop tap that the vessel would sit on top of permanently
- Room for the cover to open fully on the side where it actually opens
- The route out again once the garden has been finished around the vessel
- That equipment noise runs at times when nobody is using the vessel
- That a vessel left full imposes its load continuously, not only during use
