1.Reading the worn tracks already in the grass
The garden has been recording its own circulation for years. Read that evidence before drawing a single line on a plan.
Mark on a sketch every worn line already visible in the grass, including the shortcuts that cut across corners rather than following an edge.
Existing wear shows where people genuinely walk, and a path drawn against those lines is simply stepped over and ignored.
Note the routes taken by each person in the household, including children running and anyone carrying something bulky in both arms.
A route that works empty-handed often fails when somebody is carrying a tray, and that difference is only visible by watching.
Record which door people actually use to get into the garden, and whether a different one takes over in bad weather or after dark.
Circulation often starts at a different door than a plan assumes, and that single detail can reorganise the entire layout.
Consider whether this route needs to be direct, or whether a longer path that takes you through the garden would be welcome instead.
A working route and a strolling route are different things, and gardens usually need both rather than one compromise between them.
Note where two routes cross or converge, and whether that junction has room for two people to pass without stepping onto planting.
Junctions wear out first and are where planting gets trampled, yet they are usually drawn at the same width as the rest of the route.
Write down which routes are used every day and which are used only occasionally, since the two can reasonably be treated quite differently.
A route used now and then does not need the same treatment as the one walked every morning, and separating them keeps the work proportionate.
2.Everything that gets wheeled along the route
Most garden path regrets come down to something that has to be wheeled. Test that physically before any width is agreed.
List everything that gets wheeled along the route, including bins, a mower, a wheelbarrow, a pram, bicycles and garden waste bags.
The widest and least manoeuvrable of these sets the practical width of the route, and it is very often the bin rather than a person.
Push a full bin along the intended route now and note every point where it catches, tips, snags or has to be lifted rather than rolled.
Doing this before the path exists is one of the most useful tests an owner can run, and it needs nothing more than the bin you already have.
Note where a wheeled item has to turn, and whether there is room to swing it round without stepping into a bed or scuffing a wall.
Turning needs considerably more room than travelling in a straight line, and turning points are where edges and planting get destroyed.
Consider whether building materials or machinery would ever have to cross this route, now or during work still to come.
Where heavy loads may cross a route, ask a qualified professional what the build-up beneath needs to be rather than assuming a decorative surface will cope.
Write down whether anything has to be carried or wheeled through a gate, and whether that gate currently opens the way that helps.
Gate swing direction is settled early and becomes awkward to change once posts, hinges and surfacing are all in place.
Note where wheeled items are stored, and whether the route genuinely starts there or starts somewhere else entirely on the plan.
A route drawn from the door rather than from the shed sends everything on a detour, and that mismatch is easy to spot on a sketch.
3.Usable width, passing and where the route pinches
A path is only as wide as its narrowest moment, and planting narrows it further. Work out the usable width rather than the built width.
Consider how far planting either side will flop over the route in full growth, and whether the path still works once it does.
Paths are set out at bare width and then narrowed by the planting on both sides, which owners very rarely allow for at the drawing stage.
Decide whether two people need to walk side by side anywhere along the route, or whether single file is acceptable throughout.
This is a genuine choice with consequences for how much garden the path consumes, and it is better made deliberately than by default.
Note where the route runs tight against a wall, fence or raised bed, since a hard edge on one side makes a route feel narrower than it measures.
People instinctively keep away from a hard edge, so a path against a wall loses usable width without losing any actual dimension.
Walk the whole route and identify its narrowest single point, then decide whether that point can be widened or whether it sets the standard.
The narrowest point governs everything that can travel the route, so widening the rest of it achieves very little on its own.
Consider whether anywhere along the route needs a wider spot to set something down, open a gate or let somebody past.
A single wider moment on a narrow path solves most of the practical problems without widening the whole thing.
Walk the route carrying something bulky in both hands and note where you would have to turn sideways or put it down.
Carrying something two-handed is the honest test of a width, because it removes the option of turning sideways at a pinch point.
4.Gates, thresholds and the step out of the door
The transitions at each end of a route cause more trouble than the middle of it. Examine them in detail.
Note what happens immediately outside each door onto the garden, including any step down, and how that feels when carrying something.
The first pace out of a door is where people trip, and it is often the last thing considered when the rest of the route is planned.
Record which way each gate swings, what it swings into, and whether it can be held open while something is wheeled through.
A gate that cannot be held open turns every bin trip into a two-handed struggle, and swing direction is settled when posts are set.
Note how each gate latches and whether it can be operated with full hands, in the dark, or by everyone who needs to use it.
Where a gate has a role in keeping children or pets in, discuss the arrangement with a qualified professional rather than inferring it here.
Walk any side return or passage on the route and note where a downpipe, meter box, outside tap or fixing narrows it.
Side returns are where all the fixed obstructions of a house collect, and they are usually the tightest part of any garden route.
Record how the ground level relates to each threshold now, and note anywhere the two are already close together.
Ground levels against a building affect its fabric; ask a qualified professional before any surface is planned near a threshold.
Write down whether any part of the route crosses shared access or land you do not solely control, and what that implies.
Where a route uses shared or third-party land, the rights involved are a legal question for a qualified professional, not a design assumption.
5.Level changes and the places people hesitate
Watch where people slow down on the existing route. Hesitation marks the spots that need a professional conversation.
Note every point on the route where the ground rises or falls, and whether each is a gentle slope or a distinct step down.
A rough profile of the route is one of the most useful things an owner can hand over, and it needs no equipment to produce.
Record where existing steps are visibly uneven, and where people habitually pause or look down before taking them.
Uneven steps are exactly where people trip, and they are usually visible as scuffed or worn nosings.
Step arrangements and handrails are matters for a qualified professional and local requirements; confirm rather than copying what is already there.
Consider whether a slope could replace steps anywhere on the route, and note what that would do to the length and line of it.
Trading steps for a slope usually means a longer route, and that trade-off is better understood by you before it appears on a drawing.
Write down whether a handrail is wanted anywhere along the route, and who in the household would actually use it.
Whether a handrail is appropriate and how it should be fixed are questions for a qualified professional, with local requirements confirmed separately.
Note where a change in level meets a wall, a boundary or a raised bed, and ask how that ground is intended to be held back.
Holding back ground alongside a route is structural work; put it to a qualified professional before anyone treats it as a matter of choosing an edging.
Ask what is intended to happen to surface water at the low point of any slope on the route.
Water finds the low point on a path and shows itself in the first heavy rain rather than during a dry site visit.
6.Mud, wet weather and what comes indoors
The complaint that follows most finished gardens is mud on the floor. Trace where it comes from before choosing anything.
Walk the route during heavy rain and note where water crosses it, stands on it or runs along it rather than off it.
Water behaviour on a route is only observable in the wet, and nothing on a plan will reveal it for you.
Trace where mud actually gets picked up along the route, which door it arrives at, and how far into the house it travels before anyone takes their boots off.
Mud indoors is a frequent complaint once a garden is finished, and it usually traces back to where the route runs rather than to how often the floor is cleaned.
Note which sections of the route are shaded, stay damp, turn green or are the last to dry out after rain.
Put the wet and shaded behaviour of any surface to the supplier and the person laying it; a dry sample in the hand tells you very little about it.
Consider which part of the route is last to thaw in frost, and whether it is also the part with a change in level.
The shaded stretch that stays frosty is frequently the same stretch that has a step in it, which compounds the problem considerably.
Record whether leaves, needles or fruit fall onto the route, how much, and roughly how often it would need clearing.
A route under a canopy is a repeating clearing task, and it may be worth shifting the line rather than accepting that permanently.
Write down whether anyone using the route is unsteady on their feet, and state that plainly in the brief rather than leaving it implied.
If someone using this route is unsteady, what the route then requires is for a qualified professional to determine; nothing here is an answer to that.
7.Following the route at dusk and after dark
Routes are used in the dark far more than owners expect. Walk it at dusk and note where confidence drops away.
Walk the route at dusk without a torch and note precisely where you slow down, hesitate or lose sight of the edge.
Owners tend to plan lighting from a drawing; walking the route in fading light shows where it is genuinely needed.
Note which parts of the route are already lit by spill from windows, a security light or a street light beyond the boundary.
Existing light is usually ignored when new lighting is planned, which produces both over-lighting and awkward glare.
Consider whether lighting here is for finding the way, for seeing the surface underfoot, or for how the garden looks from indoors.
These three purposes lead to entirely different arrangements, and mixing them together tends to produce glare and dark patches at once.
Record where a light on this route would shine into a bedroom window, whether your own or a neighbour's.
A fitting aimed at a bedroom window, yours or next door, is worth raising with a qualified professional and checking against local restrictions first.
Ask where cabling would run relative to the route, and whether it should be laid before any surface goes down over it.
All outdoor electrical work is for a qualified electrician; nothing about cable routes should be assumed from these prompts.
Note whether the edges of the route need to be readable in the dark or under snow, and what would make them so.
An edge that cannot be seen is where people step off, and it is far easier to build readability in than to add it afterwards.
8.Trees, covers and fixed obstacles on the line
Some things on the line cannot be moved, and others may need to stay reachable afterwards. List them before the route is committed to.
Find where drains, manholes, gullies and any soakaway sit relative to the intended route, and mark them on your sketch.
A route laid over a drainage cover creates a permanent problem the first time that drain needs attention.
Ask a qualified professional what has to remain reachable at each cover, and how the route is meant to be set out around it before anything is laid.
Ask what services may run under the garden, including any supply to an outbuilding, and note where that information comes from.
Buried services must be established by a qualified professional before any excavation is planned, whatever a previous owner may have said.
Photograph any roots showing at the surface along the intended line, and note how close the nearest trunk stands to that stretch of the route.
Digging near roots can damage a tree and may be restricted where you live; that is an arborist question, with any protection on the tree checked separately.
Write down whether an outside tap, a meter, a stopcock or a service point sits on or beside the route and has to stay reachable at all times.
Anything that has to be read, turned off or reached in an emergency should not end up under a finished surface or behind planting.
Record whether any part of the route would pass over a septic system, a tank or a private drainage arrangement of any kind.
Anything crossing private drainage needs a qualified professional to advise before the route is fixed, and local requirements confirmed.

- Whatever paperwork exists showing where drains and gullies run
- A rough garden sketch with doors, gates, bins and drainage covers marked
- Photographs of the existing worn tracks across the grass and beds
- Your notes from walking the route with a full bin and a loaded barrow
- Details of any outbuilding supply that may cross the garden underground

- The bin route, tested with a full bin rather than imagined on a plan
- Planting flopping over and quietly narrowing the usable width
- The drainage cover that ends up in the middle of a finished path
- The shaded stretch that stays wet, green or frosted longest
- Gate swing direction settled before the surfacing is even discussed
- Lighting cable routes decided only after the surface is down
